no, seriously. Look, yes you could take a principle
like baptism and look at all the scriptures and
all of the other references and agree on some points.
this is not the issue. What i'm saying is that your
idea of reading more to obtain a consensus is foiled
by reading more. I don't claim to be a bible scholar,
but i have enough experience with scripture to know
that your idea of ultimate truth that the bible
reveals may differ than mine, and all the reading
in the world ain't going to change that.
Have you ever read anything by Charles Taylor?
He's a political philosopher who writes about
something called the hermeneutic circle. I would
recommned it. if you want i'll post the title etc.
What i'm getting at is that by nature, as human
beings, we are compelled to use interpretation
and intuition in everything we do...an attempt at
complete consensus in terms of the bible is
impossible at worst, unlikely at best...just based
on the fact that you are dealing with people.
