I figured that archived messages could still be replied to, but when I just tried to do so, it didn't work. In the future I will be more careful and archive only those threads which haven't been replied to in several days.
In the meantime, if you'd like to reply to an archived message, feel free to do so. The only catch is that you have to reply to it using the "Post A Message:" section on the main page rather than the typical one after the message you are replying to.
