: What is it about belief in a personal God and the study of mathematics that produces this phenomenon?
I don't think math is the cause of belief. Rather it is a science which doesn't really say anything about disbelief (when compared to the others).
I don't remember ever sitting through a math lecture and thinking "wow, this seems so natural--so un-supernatural". However, when I read and study about biology, cosmology, or a host of other sciences I get the distinct impression that there is nothing supernatural going on. Also, nothing in math contradicts or necessarily does away with traditional beliefs and superstitions. When you find out (through biology, paleontology, etc.) that Adam and Eve were around long before the Bible says they were (and that they had parents just like everyone else) then reliance on things like the Bible tend to disappear.
