: The statistic for mathematicians was especially interesting, considering our own Robert O'Brien, the proud mathematics major. Why do "great" mathematicians more readily believe in God? What is it about belief in a personal God and the study of mathematics that produces this phenomenon? Any thoughts or comments?

My degree is in computer science so I have a fair amount of math training. Never once in any math class was I concerned about the existence of God. I never saw a corellation between the two.

In contrast, the one and only class I took in biology really made me doubt the Adam and Eve story and therefore the entire Bible, and therefore the very existence of God. Evolution seems totally incompatible with Genesis. I think a fair amount of schizophrenia is required to believe both evolution and genesis. I think a fair amount of close-mindedness is required to disbelieve evolution.

I tried to disbelieve Genesis and still believe in God for a while, but I wasn't able to do it. What is the purpose of a God who does nothing? I CAN see a purpose in BELIEVING in an imaginary God. A lot of people find motivation, hope and comfort in this. Sometimes I do too, but not often.

Well, I'm not a scientist, but them are my thoughts.
