First contact with aliens is a scenario that has been done to death, but The Mote in God's Eye does the best job, IMO. Basically, it's a thousand years in the future and humans have already colonized other planets thanks to the fortuitous discovery of a new kind of space drive. No other intelligent life has ever been discovered, and humanity has pretty much accepted that it is alone in the universe. Then an alien probe is encountered, but destroyed before much useful information becomes available about it's builders. The star of origin is determined and an exploratory mission is sent out to make contact.

I enjoyed the book because the aliens were so original and, I thought, believable. Though the aliens had some pretty advanced technology, they had never discovered a kind of birth control compatible with their biology and had not found the secret to interstellar travel. Limited living space and resources...uncontrollable population growth...an encounter with humans who have the key to colonizing new worlds...well, I don't want to give too much away.
