I'd like your and rpcman's opinion since you've obviously read a lot about evolution. A lot of vegetarians claim that humans don't have the digestive system (too long) or teeth that a carnivore does, and that humans probably only started eating meat due to scarcity of food in the last ice age.
This is quite possible although I imagine it is controversial. I haven't studied the issue myself. I know that a chimpanzee's diet consists of berries, leaves, seeds, flowers, and insects. They do rarely eat meat (including other chimps), but not nearly as much meat as modern homo sapiens.
