Do you have a specific quote from Darwin on the subject? Darwin showed through his own direct experiments that organisms can change morphologically over relatively short intervals of time.

The fossil record doesn't *only* show this. It shows variation. Some speciation events happen *relatively* quickly compared to others. Very few could be considered 'drastic' even by proponents of PE.
