I'll try and condense what I could write on for a couple hours into ten minutes as I've got to run in a bit.
Back around 1985 "The Godmakers" was all the rage (at least in the Bay Area). It was advertised in the newspapers, talked about in churches, etc. Every weekend you could go to some church and view the film. On occassion you could talk with the creators of it--Ed Decker and Dick Baer. Other times, local ministers or former Mormons turned fundamentalist Christians would be presenting it.
I was an eager Mormon apologist at the time so I (and a few friends) used to go to these viewings and try and break things up a bit. After the film we'd ask questions the presenter couldn't answer well to try and sew seeds of doubt into the minds of all the Christians in the audience (hoping of course that they'd be curious enough to someday learn about the 'true' Mormonism and join the church).
We were moderately successful. We got one lady and her family baptized, taught a minister all six discussions, and generally put a damper on the $$$ Ed Decker and Dick Baer would take in on the nights we attended their festivities.
Back to your question on its truthfulness...
I've never read the books. I've only seen the live presentation and the first film.
Without going into details (because I don't remember them well and could care less at this point) the film and presentation had some truth in it, some errors, and the final conclusion (Mormons worship Satan) was complete BS.
Decker and Co. twist things around even worse than Mormon apologists do. He is a religious zealot who is far more concerned with $$$ and delusion than facts and reality.
Hope this helps.
