The Mormon Church's Indian Placement program was an idealistic program, with great goals that did not work out too well in totality. There were individual successes but overall it did not do to well.
The basic idea was that Indian children and youth, usually from isolated areas and often time less less than adequate homes. These people would be placed in white homes for the school year but these kids were often fish out of water, with a differnt set of standards ans social skills.
The best comment I have heard of the program was that it turned out too many "apples" red on the outside and white on the inside. This comment came to me from two separate graduates of the program. One who was chief of his band but had returned to his own people. He had no hard feelings and even assisted in the opening of an LDS branch on his reserve. The other had gained a good professional education.
He was a dentist and operated mobile clinics on several reserves. This way he kept his nearly $500,000 per year income tax free. He became a leader in a white ward of the church.
: : And just a few tribes (probably where there was a strong missionary presence) or more? Seems my friend was Blackfoot, but I can't swear to it.
: We had Navahoos(sp?) and Apachees(sp?).
