Even Steven Hawking gave a meager allowance where God may have contributed to the big bang, but put very tight parameters on Him. I think he wanted to please those of us who like to think there is some use for a God.
Sir Martin Reese, who knows Hawking about as well as anyone, states that Hawking "judged that each mention of God would double [his book] sales." (p. 6) Hawking is an atheist even if he sometimes makes it seem like he is a deist (to keep the masses happy).
