excerpt: "We've brought Zion to Babylon," President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told several hundred church members. "Zion" is a biblical term often used by LDS leaders to refer to "the pure in heart."... Longtime resident Brent Belnap, president of the Manhattan LDS Stake who chaired the temple committee for two years, brushed aside tears of joy following the service. In a voice choked with emotion, he said Sunday was "the greatest day ever for the city of New York . . . I can't think of anywhere that needs a place of peace and of refuge and of repentance more than New York City. This temple is a blessing."...

Even for LDS norms, this is an arrogant and self-righteous statement. As if every inhabitant of NYC is an atheist having free sex and rampantly using drugs. As if building a temple in Manhattan will somehow "save" the city. It's there for the convenience of church members who've migrated there and nothing else.

That attitude certainly hasn't changed with the times. Isn't this one of the traits of a cult - believing they have the one and only truth to save the world?

That is infuriating! It makes me sick how arrogant and self-righteous Mormons can be. NYC was better off without them and their tacky temple.

Just tell that BS to one of the many Orthodox Jews in the city and see them give the Mormons the spiritual middle finger.

It is astonishing how arrogant people can be. I bet the church P.R. department is panicked.

The Hinckster must be losing it. Calling New York Babylon is the height of arrogance. Particularly after 9-11, we as Americans reaffirmed our love of that great city that has such an amazing history and continues to be THE major economic hub of the world economy.

Get out the banjos and Jew's harps because Hinckley is an embarrassment to my home state.

It's arrogant as hell. They buy some space in a building and redecorate it. They dedicate it as a temple and now think this really makes a difference. What fools.

I wonder what GBH thinks makes New York more Babylonian than any other city? The Money? Mormons never shied away from that.

It was an ironic comment that actually is highly complimentary to NYC. In the real world - as opposed to the morgbot world or the world of the xtian who believes in the historicity of the bible - Babylon was an AMAZING city. Home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Home to amazing leaps made by humans in language and science and government and city building and . . . civilization. In the real world, a city being compared to Babylon is an immense compliment.

And NYC is home to some very educated people, unlike Utah, so I think actual New Yorkers might be more likely to laugh at the ignorant hick from Utah, rather than be offended by his goofy remark.

And for Pt. Loma - you use the words atheism, sex and drug use like 1) they are intertwined and 2) they are bad. Shame on you. ;-)

So what if an old man in a white jumpsuit who leads others to believe he speaks to God refers to Manhattan as Babylon? Most fellow New Yorkers I know, if they even bother to give the Mormons a second thought, would expect nothing less.

Big f*cking deal.

It is also entirely possible that the 93 year old from Utah might actually confuse the Upper West Side with the Long Island suburb named Babylon. It is where a lot of us transfer trains on the Long Island Rail Road when going to Fire Island on nice summer weekends.

As for the excitement and wonderment at the ability for the Mormons to remodel their worship facility, who cares?

This whole Mormon temple celebration has been such a non-event in the New York press. Reading the Deseret News articles however online about New York church membership and the Manhattan temple is reminiscent of war accounts given by Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, Iraqi Minister of Information last year.

Instead of a billboard in Times Square, in a few months they will have a floodlit golden trumpet player, that many may likely confuse as some tribute to the New York Philharmonic playing across the street.

Perhaps Salt Lake hopes having a temple here will keep their delusional tithe payers off New York's Babylonian streets.

PS - Glad you enjoyed your stay here PtLoma!

It is soooooo typically arrogant of TBMs to judge other people negatively like this, without even knowing them as individuals, and to paint everything in such broad brushstrokes.

Morgbots are all so stupid and vain. They and their so-called church are just contemptible.

Subject: Let's not forget what the D&C says about New York City!

Hinckley's just following a Mormon tradition of bashing New York City. Here's a threat supposedly from the Lord Himself in Doctrine and Covenants:

"Nevertheless, let the bishop go unto the city of New York, also to the city of Albany, and also to the city of Boston, and warn the people of those cities with the sound of the gospel, with a loud voice, of the desolation and utter abolishment which await them if they do reject these things (Mormonism)."
- D&C 84:114

Interesting how Mormon leaders threatened New York City with "desolation and utter abolishment" long before Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaida.

that the event is a big fat zero there. Hell, a temple dedication was a big fat zero in every city outside of the corridor. But.. I still think Hinckley's comments were out of line and in the spirit of negative PR should be used against the church. Never mind that I doubt anyone in Manhattan gives a hoot, negative PR is negative PR.

First of all..people are not driving up and down Broadway in Manhattan screaming and cursing. That neighborhood has an average one bedroom rental going for $2500.00 per month. Condos sell in high rises for over one million dollars for a one bedroom unit.
What an arrogant and insulting statement calling New York City a Babylon. Does this idiot, GBH, remember September 11?
The New York Times Sunday edition never even mentioned the temple dedication nor did the Saturday edition. New Yorker's have other things on their minds other than a cult building being opened for bizarre rituals.
GBH's statement is also an insult to mainstream churches in New York. Hundreds of Episcopal and Roman Catholic Churches are everywhere operating soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless and the abused. This guy is completely out of touch with the real world. I am so glad I am out of this #@$%$#! Cult!!

Subject: Sorry I'm still stuck on Brother Belnap's "Sunday was the greatest day ever for the city of New York" remarks...

Now that I think about it again it really irks me.

NYC is a global capital which houses schools, museums, libraries and other cultural institutions of world-historic importance.

It's so telling that Mormons can't even get their mind around the fact that there are plenty of other standards of merit besides their own petty and mediocre ones.

To be fair, though, if Mormon claims are true (which I realize is simply too preposterous for words), then the dedication of a temple in New York City might WELL be the most important thing that's ever happened there, and their standards, being those of God and the cosmos rather than merely of Wall Street and Broadway, wouldn't be "petty and mediocre."

It's all rational, if you buy into the basic assumption.

Why, did you see just how tall the World Trade Center was before religious zealots knocked it down? We know from the Old Testament that God hates tall buildings, because He's afraid that ancient Mesopotamians are capable of building a Tower so tall that it would reach heaven. If a Babylonian ziggurat (er, I mean "Tower of Babel") was such a concern, imagine just how threatening steel and concrete must be!

I served a two year mission in New York City. I served in The Bronx, Harlem, and on Staten Island. Most of my mission was spent in crappy, high crime areas. The NYC temple is on the upper west side of Manhattan, which is a good neighborhood. If Hinckley really wanted a temple built in Babylon, I suggest the red light district of Bangkok or Amsterdam.
