As a twenty something year old Nevermo I was sitting on my couch here earlier thinking how sad I was being on a Saturday night watching Xfactor and being online instead of being out in town barhopping and later clubbing when the thought suddenly occurred to me...

What the hell do young Mormons do on a Saturday night?I am guessing it doesn't involve socialising or going to a pub/club?

Are there many of the above in Utah anyway?

Saturday is a special day.
It's the day we get ready for Sunday:
We clean the house, and we shop at the store,
So we won't have to work until Monday.
We brush our clothes, and we shine our shoes,
And we call it our get-the-work-done day.
Then we trim our nails, and we shampoo our hair,
So we can be ready for Sunday!

Saturday is a special night.
It's the night we get ready for Bishop.
Put my hand way up her dress, so I'll have something to confess.
Bishop's one of the repressed males, he needs to pry into my details.
So don't hold back and go with the flow, We need to do stuff for the Bishop to know.
Saturday is a special night.
It's the night we get ready for Bishop.

They study the lessons they have to give on Sunday, since the morg has no paid clergy.

Of course, everyone over the rank of stake president does get paid.
It's only the idiots in the trenches who work for free.

In high school and jr. high, my TBM children went to movies, and to hang out at friends' houses, and school dances, and to parties, Sometimes, they would come over to our house, too, and mainly talk and laugh.

I was married to a "less active" and later divorced, so I didn't have any couples friends, and most of my single friends had dates on Saturday nights. Since I had the house all to myself, I preferred to stay home and wind down from the busy week. I still liked my job (even on the most stressful days) 100 times better than church, and better than "socializing" with Mormons. I would get ready for Sunday earlier in the day, so my Saturday night wouldn't be ruined. Just me and my dogs and cats and a good movie or book was good enough for me. My job was very social, working with people all day, and traveling.

My non-Mormon adult children have parties, like right now it's a Ute football party, but my daughter and her TBM husband go out EVERY Saturday night with his TBM family of 10 siblings, and all their kids, and have dinner somewhere inexpensive. Dutch treat.

We singles who never wanted to date anyone a second time, would have parties, too, at each other's houses, and for occasions like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (but not on the actual day itself) birthdays, to watch sports, and to have a game-night. No one ever wanted to go with me to do volunteer work, so I did that by myself on Friday. Looking back, that was no real social life at all. Utah parties are not like what we had in California!

Saturday night activities for Mormon adults:

Ice cream parlor date
Watch children's movie
A bag of licorice
Lay out clean cult garments
Spotlighting deer
One word: Jello!

My now ex-husband was a police officer and worked most Saturday nights. So I would spend the evening lining up all the clothing, socks shoes etc etc for all my 5 children to stop any problems the next day.

Then if I could, I would settle down to a nice evening with a TV movie or a book. I LOVED it.

I had SO little time to myself, that I made sure that Saturday night I got a couple of hours just for me.

My husband had to clean the church building, then go and help someone move. We were possibly going out to dinner, but, alas, they are running late.....sometimes I just Hate tscc.
I always seem to be second fiddle around here...church first, you know.....or was that family?

It is good for nevermos to bring up these things. Those of us that are BIC can forget just how very ODD it all is. My first thought when I saw your subline was that stupid song and what a PIA Saturday used to be. Saturday night? You are working on SOMETHING for church and ironing stuff and making sure everyone has the correct parts for their "uniform". You have to pack so much in that Saturday is often as stressful as a school/work day. Back a few years ago they didn't just have one three hour block. You went to different meetings and went home between. No loud play, no swimming, no going over to friends. Pretty much ruined Sunday too.

They take the ENTIRE FAMILY to the grocery store! They get one of those special giant carts encased in plastic (with special seats for the kiddies). The older kids run, skip, dance, play tag in the aisles, grab items off the shelves, spill things, etc. and the younger ones scream. Usually the dad has one cart and the mom has the other. It seems like the kids always have runny noses and sticky candy smears around their mouths. After they get the groceries, they stand in line at the deli and buy soft-serve cones for everyone.

Then they all get in the checkout line. More whining, screaming, running, jumping, playing tag, begging for candy, etc. ensues. The mom will pull out a bunch of wrinkled coupons while the dad chats with the cashier about tomorrow's church meetings.

I try to avoid my local grocery store on Saturdays.

Some probably, deep down in their hearts, wish they were out with their non-Mormon friends (if they have any...or will admit to having any) enjoying a good beer or cocktail or three, and hope some zealot doesn't see them and rat them out to their bishop or SP.

Well, actually, folks go to TSCC meetings on Sunday hung over very frequently -- it's just that their hang over is the result of LACK OF SLEEP, rather than the result of drinking alcohol.

How do you think they get all the many things done, that they have to do for their large brood of kiddies to make it to church on Sunday?

It takes ALOT OF SATURDAY NIGHT PREP TIME to get 5 or 7 or even 11 kids ready to go to church the next day.

For young parents, if one of their kids has a birthday on Sunday, they have a big party on Saturday night, as it would be a sin to have it after church. If the party is at a restaurant, others just hoping to have a nice meal often have to listen to those kids screaming while they run around the place.

I would say watching movies was the staple of single adult Mormons when I was Mormon.

TBH I kind of missed the non-alcoholic environment because it forced people to be creative with their activities.

I love going out drinking but sometimes it seems non-Mormons, at least when in larger groups just default to drinking at bars and not doing anything else.

As a little girl growing up TBM the Saturday night ritual was taking a bath.

My siblings and I shared the bathwater, one after another. Hated that, if you were on the end of the line it was not only cool, it was already soapy and murky.

As a teenager we had teen activities. My parents divorced when I was 15, so after that I was inactive for a period of several years (off and on.) That was actually more fun times than church activities.

Church was always structured and regulated. Our time was not our own. It belonged to the church ie, corporation first, family second.

As a young adult I was involved with young singles activities. That was in the day when there were some good ones. Enjoyed the special occasion movies like seeing "Gigi" with the Relief Society special outing. Or "It's a Wonderful Life," with the young single adults another.

Dances were some of the most somber occasions of all. A Catholic couple visiting from South America one New Year's Eve asked me outright if that was typical of LDS dances? I said yes it was.

The wife told me it was the most somber group of people they'd ever been with on a New Year's Eve. They left early. :)

Back to Saturday nights, we mostly just prepared ourselves for Sunday, at any age.

IcedTea described it, exactly! The Mormons like the free samples! I avoid grocery stores and the less expensive restaurants on Saturdays, too.

Maybe we don't understand, that some Mormons would rather clean the church building, than spend a Saturday with the kids at Walmart. Mormons need to understand that they have more options.

When I was TBM, I would celebrate Mondays! Back to work that's fulfilling and lucrative! Back to being a human being again. Back to the children's reasonable routines of school, playtime, nap-time, lessons, sports. Cozy evenings together, relaxing as a family, after homework is done. Nothing beats real life!

I don't know what Mormons do on a Saturday night!

I'm not a Mormon, anymore, so I do different things on a Saturday night, depending on my mood, the season, who I'm with.... No two Saturdays are the same.

I don't even know a Mormon well enough to call up and ask what he or she does on Saturday nights!

This makes me so happy--to not know the answer to this question!
