Interesting. I didn't know you had to be Christian to lead a cub scout den, but maybe you do to lead a Presbyterian den.

Of course, an LDS ward would NEVER--unless no one else in the ward was qualified, but then how could that ever happen?--let a non-Mormon lead a den.

It's the usual LDS double standard: "We LDS want to be considered mainstream, but we look down our noses at anyone who isn't LDS." Then the LDS cry foul when the tables get turned and they or the media quickly enough play the persecution card.

Atheists can be scout leaders. Why would you say that? It is not a requirement by National Scout Headquarters that leaders profess any religious affiliation.

I stand totally corrected. The National Bylaws prohibit "..agnostics, atheists and 'avowed' homosexuals from membership in the Boy Scouts of America...".

I learn something new every day. Didn't know that one.

Hey, Ron,

He says that because BSA has rules concerning atheists, agnostics and homosexuals. Atheists/agnostics can't be troop members or leaders and homosexuals can't be leaders.

"● Youth and Adult Volunteers
Boy Scouts of America believes that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. Accordingly, youth members and adult volunteer leaders of Boy Scouts of America obligate themselves to do their duty to God and be reverent as embodied in the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Leaders also must subscribe to the Declaration of Religious Principle. Because of its views concerning the duty to God, Boy Scouts of America believes that an atheist or agnostic is not an appropriate role model of the Scout Oath and Law for adolescent boys. Because of Scouting’s methods and beliefs, Scouting does not accept atheists and agnostics as members or adult volunteer leaders."

The by laws were upheld by the Supreme Court.
