WP puff piece on the new office building turned chapel in Arlington, VA dedicated to singles.

Notice the highly derisive comments from WP readers, with a few rebuttals by Mopologists.

But; they're Spot On about pressure to hook-up;
conversions in the U.S. & other internet-access areas must be scraping the bottom, so internal growth is the Only Future for LDS, Inc.

I did appreciate what Brother Whitley had to say, and his independent thinking is deadly to TBM-status:

Jared Whitley, a 33-year-old who works in defense contracting and attends services at the Crystal City chapel, said all the pressure on single Mormons can backfire.

“One of the real problems is that Mormon culture puts a lot of emphasis on going on dates and on getting married, but really not a lot on just being in a relationship,” he said. People start thinking about marriage after the first date, which “puts up too much pressure too soon, and people tend to recoil.”

Whitley is active in the older singles congregation, but he said he has become more open to dating non-Mormons, something discouraged in the church.

I just noticed in the picture how outnumbered the men are to the women.

Actually, my first reaction was a internal cringe.

All that emphasis on meeting someone and getting married would be the worlds biggest turnoff ever for me. I can just hear the forced laughter, the false flattery, the awkward conversations and games of oneupmanship.

I feel embarrassed for all those having to go through this.

They are in an inner suburb of DC. There are lots of Hispanics, blacks, and Asians (Indians, Chinese, Arabs, etc.) in the S. Arlington Area. They are a few blocks from multiple ethnic restaurants.

These young people are 100% white, and probably 95% Republican in Arlington County which has 5 Democrats and no Republicans on the county board. They are just East Provo.

Yes...Now you know how I feel.

What is the likelihood those of us who are not "white and delightsome" can break in...

GOd knows I tried...but now I realize I was never the one with a problem to begin with.

Funny thing tho' You are right...people in the CHURCH don't know anything about having a relationship.

Stupid CULT!

I noticed that as well. I also recall reading posts on this board that have discussed how there tends to be more women than men in singles wards. I wondered if the ratio randomly captured in the photo reflects the makeup of the Crystal City singles wards. It would be depressing for the single Mormon women if that were the case.

With those ratios, why can't the guys get married?

Oh, because most of them are gay!

Do you really think that's the case, axeldc? Wow, SUPER depressing for the women. I wonder if they know.

Do I think? I know!

If a male RM graduates from BYU without getting married, it's either because you have serious personality flaws or you are gay. The vast majority of Colonial Ward members are BYU grads who moved to DC for work or grad school. Lots of handsome men who just somehow couldn't find a good women in 3 years with 13,000 eligible girls waiting to get hitched. I met a lot of Colonial Ward alums in the gay bars of DC.

Age those BYU alums to 30 when they move to the Colonial Ward and you have men who have been under pressure for a decade to get married. They are successful, well paid college grad RMs surrounded by desperate women. Their parents are pulling their hair out because they are still single and the Bishop is constantly lecturing them to settle down.

Why would those guys go unmarried that long? Because they just haven't found the right girl, or because they really want to find a nice guy?

HEY! I resemble that remark. :P Though I'm working out my personality flaws that I developed from growing up in a smothered home and church.

I have socialized with plenty of gays and sometimes get called soft gay, but my porn habits and relationships confirm that I am completely hetero. :)

I left the Mormon Church before computer matching became as popular as it currently is, but given the alleged success claimed by sites like E Harmony, hasn't it occurred to the Mormon suits to set up a site like that church-wide for single Mormons?
