Last time I checked (must have been 2008/9), more than half the temples were open on appointment only. When I checked the temple schedules today, however, I noticed that most of them are open 5 days a week now. The number of temples that is open less days, or even by appointment only, is the exception rather than the rule (I've analysed about half the data so far).

What happened? Did central command order the temple presidents to open up shop more?

Even if they did, though, it's still window dressing. On average, the temples I analysed so far run at 44% capacity. When I'm done, I'll let you know the full results.

If the staff is now all volunteer and they want to put on a show that they are busy, might be worth the small expense to do so.

Not sure how they are staffed, but no paid staff would allow them to open more hours.

There are probably more retirees these days.
They can't afford to go on senior missions, so they serve in the temple. They need something to do, other than spending time with their family.

"They need something to do, other than spending time with their family."

I don't have any stats, only observations about temple presidents/wives crying during sacrament meetings while back about low temple attendance.
