This Church encourages education. We believe in education. There is incumbent upon every member of the Church, as a mandate from the Lord, to get all the education you can get. … There is incumbent upon the Latter-day Saints a dictum from the Lord Himself to educate our minds and our hands. ("Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley," 721-724)

I used to believe that quote but now I am starting to think that there might be different motives behind it. Just curious what others opinions are since I am starting to see things so differently now.

They want members who can make money for them. Ten percent of a lawyers salary is different than ten percent of a policeman's salary, alas. Also, it makes them look good and open minded, like they really want the best for their members. It goes with the whole lofty goals thing.

It's why the church and its members have been excellent peddlers of booze, tobacco, gambling and porn at varying times.

I haven't heard about this before. Do you know where I could read more about this?

When I was college age, education for women was very discouraged. They didn't see the women's rights coming.
Women in my generation got divorced instead of staying in loveless marriages. They finally had the ability to make choices for themselves.
All the sudden there were a lot of single mothers that needed welfare help. They started to change their tune about women getting educated. The church didn't want to support divorced women and children for life.
