For me, that looks like a good night to get a reservation at a good steak house. ;-)

The way I read it, it's only a suggestion. And a smart one at that..

I'm single; everyday is meatless.

(Did I just type that out loud?)

Just think of me as the Kansas City Stake Company, delivering meat to homes without it, since...where however long that Company has been around.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I'll go stand in the corner now while you fill out the paper work with the court.

That means I'm not stuck with one meet, I can select from a variety of meets.

I'm confused, is LA suffering a meat shortage?

i dk. Daughter & son in law (in so cal among the 20 million) are finding it difficult to purchase meat that isn't turning, smells bad at all three stores & say even a major retailer's meat is so close or already turned. They buy meat whenever it doesn't smell bad, often returning with no meat purchased. They say meat is better stores sell better meat closer to the farm (that's their own explanation.) I linked to story of midwest farms serving truck loads of expired candy for carbs, (you can google it) mixed with something for minerals to feedlot cattle (1400) because of the price of corn (there's a drought like the one in the fifties) Locally, Multiple dairies filed bankrupt, after mortgaging tiers of prorperty (20 or mortgages) to pull assets out to keep operating at a loss, brother said it's if they own land to raise their own corn is the clincher if they can keep going.
on the phone I support my daughter in oatmeal breakfast not steak, weekly bar b q meat for a treat not expecting daily meat- because you have to make life work in the most joy ful way available to you within uncontrollable circumstances.
For instance there was a drop in hamburger prices when dairies were closing (due to not owning land locally to grow corn for feed) as they sold out dairy cows 'surplus' or too expensive to keep (feeding at a loss when they were buying not raising the feed.) Then, once the dairies that didn't have their own crop land closed or were done shrinking, the price of hamburger raised up again and now is quite high in my locale. So I make meatless or vegetable spaghetti with a touch of cheese serving. It suites me I'm trying to be a flexible fifty.

So in this article I support the idea that the LA times is trying to promote, people can find their happiness working together. & that was a good article.

there is no 'bigbrother' engaged here- there is a drought impacting feed prices to raise livestock.

Having one vegetarian meal a week is good for your health, the environment, AND your wallet. If you listen to NPR, this has been encouraged for years as part of a Green lifestyle.

I cook 2-5 vegetarian meals a week. I can make meals where you don't miss having beef or chicken every night and it's very budget friendly.

Ain't nobody forcing anyone to participate in Meatless Monday.

I grew up Catholic, and the tradition for Catholics used to be meatless Fridays. Officially this was interpreted to mean that fish was okay, but that beef, chicken, pork and lamb were out. I remember this as being a nice custom. I still follow it at times. I would not mind expanding my repetoire to include more vegetarian main dishes.

"Councilwoman Jan Perry, who introduced the motion with Councilman Ed Reyes, noted the environmental impacts of meat production, and she emphasized that a high-meat diet has been linked to health problems such as colon, prostate, kidney and breast cancers, as well as heart disease."

Now..the high meat in your diet is bad for you and science/medical community have the data to support this...BUT...the first part of that statement is what bothers me about some of the thinking in this country...

There is ALWAYS and environmental impact to almost...
E---V---E---R---Y---T---H---I---N---G we do, produce, make, extract and use...there's no getting around it.

You want CLEAN energy...there will be an environmental impact

How is that big brother? Giving people suggestions for a healthier life and environment isn't big brother. People can opt not to follow it. For those who otherwise thought "what can one person do, what little change will matter in my life" now they have a new suggestion.

For crying out loud, the government and health boards make suggestions, and then people somehow lose their ability to process common sense and start shouting big brother. Do you have a better idea?

LDS will 'undoubtedly' revile AGAINST This, because it didn't come thru their channel; Mormons are TRAINED to control their lives according to Authority, NOT according to Right/Wrong of any specific matter.

There are so many REAL problems in our country.

There is no definitive science behind this 'suggestion'. Dietary advice changes daily. This particular idea brings up visions of low carb vs low fat diets. Low carb is winning that fight.

There is a cost to making proclamations like this. It gets codified. It takes up legal space, media space. It draws away people's attention from real issues.

And it gives fodder to tea party types and helps grow the opposition.

It makes as much sense as religionists who urge people to follow religious doctrine, and then pass laws to force it.

How many real problems in our country can the LOCAL government in LA solve? if you are against this LOCAL government's suggestion, bringing up countrywide issues is faulty logic.

Its a good idea if you give a crap about the environment. The meat industry is one of the biggest polluters out there and eating less meat is one easy way to help cut down on carbon emissions.

I have many meatless days and some delicious steak days. I am the decider on which days, however. Health suggestions from government are fine, but they are a bit concerning because suggestions have a way of turning into edicts. Take the WoW, for instance.

To be fair, Meatless Monday has been a big food blog trend/meme for years. Kind of like Souper Sunday. I think the name flow has a lot to do with the day selection. If you pick a few days a month at your leisure, it's the same thing. It just doesn't have the same ring as ring as the alliterative "meatless monday"

F#$% that! Sounds like the perfect time for a BBQ!

He he! I almost want to move to LA just to do this. Imagining all the pious, condescending looks from the self-righteous, stuck-up vegetarians makes me smile!

...I just realized why I hate vegetarians. They tend to act exactly like the worst type of Mormons!!

Well, here you are, then, nickname, you can hate on me too.

I eat some chicken or turkey on average once a week. No other meat in my diet. Eggs and milk in moderation, most days no eggs, so lacto vegie. I eat lower fat in general, complex carbs, nuts & seeds, raw stuff.

I'm 64, and my body feels a lot better when I eat this way. Sorry you meet so many "missionary vegies with toods", nickname. I don't preach about diet, but this thread is appropriate.

I'm a vegetarian, and I couldn't care less what you eat, or what anyone else eats. Good job, it's ironic, you just made yourself look like the worst kind of mormon. The paint everyone with the same stroke Mormon. THe all A are B mormons.

Well done you.

Mondays sound like a great day to have a BBQ when the weather is nice, but then again, I do live in the area. Then again, the idea of having a day that is meatless isn't a new one, as previously mentioned, it was a Catholic tradition to have fish on Fridays, as that wasn't considered "meat." Now, it's generally something that is done on Fridays during Lent, something Mormons have no concept of.

I love that many of us let big corporations invade our lives and let them tell us what to eat, but if the government campaigns for healthier eating we go apeshit and comPlain about our all-mighty rights. Let's fuck our children's generation over - our children who are on target to have lower life expectancies than we are because of poor diet and activity. (Glick, M. (2005). A concern that cannot weight. Journal of the American Dental Association, 136, 572-573.)

I don't believe carbon dioxide is evil, and I like meat. I also think carbs are a big cause of obesity.

However, as someone who just saw the 2 steers raised from calves taken to slaughter, I think one day a week to think about these animals isn't much to ask.

These steers were fed by my family and neighbours contributions of their yards and by a restaurant owner's scraps. When the grass got low we cut tree branches and let the cows "prune" our yards. It hadn't rained for 3 months and we had nothing more to feed them with. We all knew they were not pets and they would end up at the meat works, but each of them had a personality, different taste in food, and little quirks. I really miss them.

Sometimes we get too far removed from the source of our food. Those are sentient beings you're eating. I still love steak, but I often choose eggs (free range) or cheese. Why not?

I'm a vegan bitches!!
Well, probably 28 days out of the month haha don't worry I'm not a hippie tree hugger...I originally tried it out to clear up my skin in high school and just ended up really enjoying the challenge of cooking delicious things! But I'm kinda awesome at it now;) No judgement to meat eaters though! I, like wittyname, could care less what anyone puts in their mouth!
