I remember hearing this in sunday school. I almost laughed at how ridiculous it was, but everyone else was taking it seriously. I don't understand how anyone could believe this:

http://www.holyfetch.com/entertainment/mick_jagger.html

This part is probably the funniest:

"'You say it is a lie. I must have missed that part. Show me.' There was complete silence."

Why would a supposedly non-fiction book call itself a lie?

I heard that too and remember totally believing it. Hearing it now I do not believe for a second that the incident happened, at least not in the way Cook claims. What an obvious fabrication.

On what basis is HolyFetch.com declaring this story "true"? I've usually been impressed with that website's skepticism when it comes to crap like this. Disappointed.

Because a General Authority told the story. No evidence required.

Yeah, remember HolyFetch is not a critical site but a site run by believers and so if Cook told the story (which they prove is true via the link - I just listened to it) then the story just HAS to be true.

I'm pretty sure if this had actually happened and Cook had tossed the book in Jagger's lap and challenged him to prove it was a lie, there would NOT have been complete silence.

Jagger would have had some response, whether it was to laugh at him or punch him in his fat face.

With a bit of prodding from David Hume I asked myself this
about the Gene Cook/Mick Jagger story (assuming Cook didn't
make the whole thing up out of thin air--Paul H. Dunn style):

What is more likely? That there was an empty seat on an
airplane next to Mick Jagger that Cook ended up sitting in,
and that Mick Jagger said all that stuff?

Or

That someone sitting next to Gene Cook was reading a magazine
with pictures of Mick Jagger in it and when Gene Cook, the
goofy looking guy with the big idiot grin said, "Hi, I'm Gene
Cook from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,"
the guy said, "well, I'm Mick Jagger," in response pointing to
the pic in the 'zine, and then gives all the answers that Cook
reported?

Has anyone ever asked Mick to find out if it's true? Or to get his side of the conversation (if it ever happened)?

I think in response to your question he might ask.

Who is Gene Cook?

I thought the general authorities flew coach.......

I'm pretty sure Jagger doesn't.

How were they sitting next to each other?

that's the question I'd ask cook....bet i'd hear silence to as the response.

I first heard this story about five years ago on this very forum. I went onto Mick Jagger's website, which also had a forum, and posted the question: did this happen or not? Didn't get an answer within a few days, and forgot about it then. The forum has now been removed from his website anyway.

That story is such a barefaced lie on so many levels it is impossible to know where to begin unless you start off knowing that the only GA who was a bigger liar was Paul H. Dunn.

1) As if Jagger would be happy to have any old schmuck sit right next to him and engage him in conversation.
2) Even if this happened, do you not think that Jagger totally played Cook in an ironic manner. Playing on his fears and feeding him BS just to amuse himself and perhaps shut this guy up.

If this really happened.... Jagger probably later briefly relates to a friend about how he so wound up this tight-assed American religious nut. They laugh hysterically as Jagger pulls a facial impression of Cook's complete horror as he soaks up the BS.

Meanwhile an aghast Cook can't wait to tell the whole world about the evils of this music and how Satan is using Jagger as his henchman to perform his nefarious work of destruction.

Hey Gene you gullible fool. Never heard of the good old British sense of humour? Do you understand what sarcasm is?

For what it's worth--

This question was brought up here years ago. Someone contacted Jagger's publicist or agent or someone professionally attached to Jagger and asked if there was any truth to the story. The person attached to Jagger replied with something like, "someone is making things up."
