I grew up in Utah. Religion was deeply part of the culture. Once, you could have fired a on Main Street on a Sunday without the risk of hitting anyone. Mormonism was part of the lore and the narrative. You grew up knowing Mormons were the only pioneers and that Brigham Young was a genius who was inspired by God. Non-Mormons just had not smarted up enough to realize Mormons were they true religion of God.
You're part of the problem. Mormons controlled Utah. Mormon businessman felt the best way to grow the church and their business was to encourage people to move to Utah. They figure living among God's chosen you would see the light and convert.
This didn't happen. More people questioned the dominate order. Mormons were not used to being questioned and even ridiculed. Mormons have a symbiotic relationship with persecution. Mormons need prosecution {sic} to validate their faith.
