Excellent blog post that is worth the time to read.

http://rationalfaiths.com/apology-priesthood-ban/

"Mormons appear to be so constitutionally averse to criticizing their leaders that they are willing to place responsibility for the Priesthood ban on anybody and everybody in the world (and out of the world in the case of God) rather than state the simple and obvious truth—that the Church leaders who instituted and perpetuated the Priesthood ban for over 125 years are the ones responsible for (…wait for it…) the institution and perpetuation of the Priesthood ban for over 125 years.

This reluctance to even discuss the historical facts relating to the ban, and when discussed to avoid laying responsibility for the Priesthood ban at the feet of Church leaders, may account for a number of interesting aspects of the Church’s new 'Race and the Priesthood' essay."

Some really great comments, too, even from believers.

I truly believe TCOJCOLDS would allow women to hold priesthood
long before they would ever apologize...for anything!

Amazing how people can spend so much time trying to figure out how and why and when their inspired leaders were wrong.

I find it easier to call them uninspired.

If church leaders are right 50% of the time, and your average business leaders are right 50% of the time, what is the evidence of inspiration?

This "apology" crap is irritating. No one currently alive is responsible for tscc's priesthood ban. No one owes anyone an apology. People should apologize for what they, personally, do. Nothing more.

Didn't you hear? Corporations are people too. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day SaintsTM has some explaining to do.

The first 25 or so years of my life, including my mission, the ban was in effect. Many/most of those people are still alive. "Personally perpetuating" doesn't count? Even sans apology, they should stop lying about it and face up to it.

Tom Monson, Tom Perry, and Boyd Packer were all members of the 12 before 1978, so tell us again how no individual who is currently alive had anything to do with banning blacks from the priesthood.

Even if they did apologize, it would be meaningless. They would only do it to try and save themselves. The bottom line is they aren't sorry for anything. They want everyone to shut up and go back to the way things used to be when people didn't have any information and the church controlled what they did or didn't know. That's what they're praying for. I don't think their prayers are going to be answered to their liking.

The mormon code is the non-apology, like Mittens when he attacked and cut off a fellow student's hair, he was sorry if he offended the guy, but hey, it was just good old 70's homophobic fun, what's not to like?

As Dallin Oaks said "It is wrong to criticize leaders of the church--even if the criticism is true."

I guess that applies to the leaders themselves. They cannot criticize themselves or their departed predecessors. Consequently, apology or admitting that they were wrong just will not fly.
