Here in PNW, some churches are altering their schedules so ppl can watch the SB;

Is this happening ANYWHERE in MoMism? I doubt it, that's not "policy".

Growing up in Dallas the only time during church that wasn't interrupted by a radio broadcast was Sacrament service. Our bishop would normally tell us all in August that it was inappropriate and he would be in on the action by November. In the early 90s Football was king and god could go to hell for all anyone cared.

That's cool! (though I never let Church schedule deter me :)) I think I've only missed one Super Bowl since the 1980...that was the year I was baptized (Super Bowl was 1-2 weeks after the big event)...what TBM dedication I had that year (I missed Marcus Allen's performance for the ages against the Redskins)...I haven't had quite that level of dedication since :)

I sometimes do, but only when I post something, after getting up in the middle of the night, that no one sees, if I think it is still worthy. Though most of the time I post in the middle of the night, it is stuff I regret people seeing, because I am not at my rational best at 4am in the Morning.

In Wash DC area, quite a few church members had season tickets to the Redskins. These tickets are handed down from family members-very hard to come by. In my ward, members would pass tickets around so the others could take turns going to the game (including the Bishopric).
In Houston, during football season, afternoon meetings can be sparse.

I remember growing up the lesson o n Superbowl Sunday always seemed to be about keeping the Sabbath day holy.

Isn't super bowl Sunday also fast Sunday? That sucks.

Meanwhile, we'll be having barbecued ribs, etc.

I remember growing up that it was okay to just attend SM if other meetings would interrupt the super bowl. My parents were too nerdy and faithful to take up this offer, but I know plenty of other families that did.

DW and I have spent the last 4 Super Bowls in Utah. (We live in Calif.)

Skiing, drinking, loud laughter, swearing, rule breaking...

Going to Palm Springs instead of Utah tomorrow.

I still remember some comments our, then, bishop made several years ago over the pulpit, the Sunday morning before the Super Bowl started. He challenged everyone to NOT watch the game and instead read the scriptures as a family. Yeah, right. [eye roll]

My wife and I went to Living Waters Spa in Desert Hot Springs. It was so nice. We should give Terra Cotta a try, though.

I feel sorry for the poor Gringo mission president who has to convince Brazilians, Argentinians, etc not to watch the World Cup final.

I had my mission farewell on Super Bowl Sunday. At the end of my talk I invited every ward member to my house to WATCH the
Super Bowl! 1982 San Francisco vs Cincinnati Bengals. 49ers won 23-21

Amen...

The game is at 6:30 Eastern Time, which puts it at 3:30 Pacific time. Most non-LDS churches are done by 12:00 or 12:30, which is why regular season NFL games start at 1:00 Eastern/Pacific. Gotta give fans time to get home from church and settled in front of the TV.

Big family get-together for Superbowl Sunday.

Everyone brings a dish and has FUN.

Church? WTF is that?

Someone just mentioned to me that some bishop in California would deliberately schedule meetings all day on Superbowl Sunday.

Vindictive dumbasses.

Yesss, that's really going to make people appreciate church more.
God,what a stupid cult.

When I lived in Reno, NV I had a Bishop who felt "inspired" that after the first hour of church (Sacrament Meeting) on Super Bowl Sunday, we should go home and spend time with our families. That was awesome!!

Then again, I knew the church in Reno would be a little different when upon moving there, I was given the option of having home teachers or not. It was great.

How about after a hard 3-hour day at church, they play the superbowl on a big screen in the gym for free? They could order pizzas on Saturday to be delivered on Sunday so the RS doesn't have to spend the entire day in the kitchen "serving" others. Not my idea of a fun time, but it you're a tbm, it would be a nice gesture from TSCC.
