Wendover is a major escape for many Utahns. For me, it was a great way to escape the Mormon oppression. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill. They dim the lights now to save electricity, they have ruined their once great single blackjack games, and they are paranoid and will bar players for stupid reasons. They are hurting financially, and you can feel the hurt when you go there.

I used to go to Wendover all the time, and I would talk about it all the time. Now I go to Las Vegas instead, but I don't go as often, because it is more expensive (I live in Provo). I spend most of my time alone, since I'm quiet by nature and don't believe in Mormonism.

I am seriously thinking about moving to Henderson, Nevada eventually. I love Las Vegas. There is so much to do there. The skies are beautiful there. I love the glitzy lighting. If I lived there, I could afford to attend upscale parties and go to great shows. Maybe Wendover did me a favor. By turning me away, Wendover has given me a new fascination with Las Vegas. Mormonism drove me to Wendover, and now Wendover is driving me to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas has a strong Mormon presence. But not like Utah. David Lory Vanderbeek is running for governor of Nevada and he is Mormon, but I like him. Vegas is weird because it has a HUGE number of churches, of all different denominations, yet it is a major gambling town nicknamed "sin city." Mormons originally started Las Vegas, but they didn't get much of a foothold. Mormons employees were valued because they didn't drink.

It's weird that perhaps the most radical religious state is right next door to the most radical gambling state.

I know that you've had issues with Wendover for awhile.

Some friends of mine lived in Las Vegas and really loved it. They took advantage of all of the outdoor recreational opportunities there. But do check out the job and housing market quite thoroughly before you move there.

Having driven through Wendover countless times on my Interstate 80 trips between Utah and California, my impression has been that Wendover is and always has been sort of a dump in the desert - a small, isolated outpost in the middle of nowhere whose existence largely depends on travelers passing through and Utahns wanting a brief respite along the stateline from the insanity of their lives along the Wasatch Front. I mean really - Who in their right mind would consider moving to Wendover permanently?

I've been to Wendover. It's a dirty little town situated between sage and salt. The streets are meaner than you'd expect from a town that size. Ratty casinos and gas stations dominate the downtown. I can't imagine living there.

Preaching to the choir ! All I can add is if you are still in Utah , hurry up . One more minute is too tragic to contemplate .

I do like living in Las Vegas, but there are a couple of things to consider. Wages have gone way down. My husband is making about 2/3 what he was in 2008, and I finally got my first raise since then. You can find jobs, but there is so much competition for them, the compensation packages have taken a hit.

Unless you have a pool, it is to hot to spend much time outside in the summertime. We have some good hiking, and even a small ski area in the winter, but if you are used to doing a lot of things outdoors, the heat might really hinder that.

There is a big mormon influence where I work, but also enough non members that I can pretty much be out in the open about being an exmo. I keep my atheism under my hat though, for the most part.

You admitted to counting cards before. That's not wendover's problem, it's yours.

Right, no casino will put up with that.

Exactly.

Vegas will kick you out just as fast if/when they catch you counting. You will be asked to not come back and it will be enforced. Hello facial recognition software.

There is such beauty there and a feeling of freedom after leaving Utah.

I don't enjoy casinos much but my husband does, so we go there for his sake and I love to see him having such a good time in Nevada.

I'd hate to live in Wendover. Wish it hadn't declined for the Utahans who need that outlet.

Too bad? People have found what they consider better ways to spend their time and money. Wendover is an afterclap of the 1950s.

As for Las Vegas, all those fountains are going to look pretty pathetic in a few years with no water in them.

I'd love to have a Wendower close by where I live....
I went to Lake Charles only once when I moved to Houston, that was enough......
I try to go Wendower everytime I visit Salt Lake Fridays; seafood buffet is decent in Rainbow as compared to any New Mexico, Luisiana Casinos (they are by enlarge pathetic & dirty).
Nevada knows their Gambling business for sure.

Yes, it's getting xpensive and quality of service is not what it used to be for sure.....

There is a much nicer casino than anything in Wendover in Northern california called thunder valley, or The south lake tahoe/Reno area, you can even gamble on riverboats in Kentucky. there are a lot of casinos in America right now, not all in Las Vegas or Wendover

Need to correct you on the riverboats in Kentucky. There is no casino gambling in Kentucky. We are trying to change that but so far it has not been allowed.

Gamble on horse races? - Every day, all day.
Lotto? - Absolutely
Slot machine or blackjack? - You heathen - we banish you to Ohio or Indiana you sinner.

There have been inroads here in the state over the past few years and our governor is pushing casinos but so far it has not gotten enough traction to pass.

Hopefully we will have gambling by 2016

My aunt is a TBM gambling fanatic! She loves it and gambles at any and all indian casino's out west. She and her husband retired this year and she is so far in debt, she's sold her house, and her IRA and is now living in a shed on her son's commercial property.

But she LOVES gambling!! And she knows the church is TRUE!

Here's my testament to Wendover. I won $550 on a slot machine when I was 19. And they gave me the money just fine without checking my id. Now that was "classy" If you have the car and gas to go to Vegas, of course that would be preferred. But a short trip to get away to Wendover isn't that bad. Even when you don't win money. I would also never want to live there, but to say it's complete sh!t is wrong. What else are you going to do, go play bingo at Fort Hall? There are only so many choices around here.
