How do you feel about the new name you received in the temple? I'm torn. On one hand, I feel I should not divulge it, or any of the most secret parts of the temple, as an olive branch to my tbm family and friends. On the other hand, I want to shout it from the house tops just to tempt the fear of it and thus be rid of the power that fear has over me.

I for one, do not like to live in fear. If anything has me scared, I do everything to face it. I would shout it if I were you.

I dont have one,but I would feel okay giving it to people who are interested. I wouldnt give it to TBMs because it would upset them.

Secret names are a silly adolescent affectation Joe S. was able to perpetrate on naïve followers. Revealing these names might be therapeutic for many recovering exmos. If so, tell it. If not, don't bother.

Exactly. Secret code names, secret handshakes to get into the club. It's like a 10 year old kid's fort out in the woods, but for grown ups.

Hi, my secret clubhouse name is Naomi. Same name as the other 100s of women that went that day. Every now and then on here someone starts a thread called new temple name shout out. Look them up.

I suppose I'll just out with it.

Sam.

I went through the Mesa Arizona temple January 27,28,or29 in 2008.

I suppose I'll just come out with it.

Sam. January 27-29 2008. Mesa, Arizona temple.

I asked my father who was my escort if it was my premortal name. He said no. I never understood exactly what the heck it was even for. I was just asked to keep it sacred, just because. I thought I could do that, back when the church was something I had faith in.

According to the Temple Name Oracle, "Sam" was on the 5th.

If it still has a hold on you, then it will be very liberating for you to tell others.

You don't have to tell tbm family members as that will offend them greatly, but you could start with telling us here.

We've had quite a few temple names shout-outs over the years. ;-)

It will most probably make you feel much better and release that fear that still has a grip on you.

Why don't we take this step by step: tell me the date and the temple you received your first endowment on/in. That is not sacred information and won't violate your conscience or vows.

Í'll then tell you your temple name and you will know it's not such a big secret after all.

My servant John, thy super-secret temple name shall be Caleb. Thus sayeth the temple name oracle:

I wonder if "rt nli" could do a reverse-sort for me and tell me when I got my endowment by looking at my temple name (Job). It was, as I recall, in early December 1968 and in the SL temple, but I no longer recall the date.

I accidentally did your submission incorrectly, and submitted "Job" in your Dec 1968 oracle for like Dec 10 or something. I think that was wrong and I didn't mean to do that.

December 1968, Job?

Verily, Verily, thus saith the Temple Name Oracle, the day thou wentst through the temple was the 16th.

(Just scroll down to where it says "Presumed list: September 4, 1963 to June 25, 1974")

The revelation that it's the same name for everyone really takes the mysticism out of it by its lonesome factual self. Why do we do these silly rituals? Even having taken "temple prep" (some prep!) I had no idea what I was in for. My faith was that fixed. Some old dude could have taken me into a room and started touching me and I would have chalked it up to God's will. (I hear they actually used to do that.)

It's a clubhouse name, like Cheryl says. It's not magic, and do you know that everyone who attended your temple on that day got the same name? So you're not even special.

Mine is "Job." Every guy attending the SL temple on the day I went through for my own so-called "endowments" is "Job."

I took it upon myself to change my temple name. I am now "Duncan."

I am suppose to go through eternity with the Jewish name of Aaron? Fuck that! It is nonsense. How did I fall for that bullshit?

Hi my name is Dinah, I have often thought of creating a facebook page with my name. My husband told me his but I can't remember it. Such a stupid thing, not sure why I was worried for so long about it.

Mine was Jeremiah. I don't feel the need to shout it from the rooftops, and I can't see any upside to sharing it with my believing friends and family.

To me the temple covenants had nothing to do with God because the whole ceremony was the invention of one man, Joseph Smith. So, I have shared details with people when they've asked. Other than that, I have let it be.

Its all bullsh!t anyway, so what the hell does it matter if we tell people?

Hi I'm Isabel and went thru the LA temple on June 29, 1978.

So there, put that in your pipe and smoke it!

My new name is, get ready, Cheesebutt!! I must say that I love it as much as I love all things mormony. Nah, I'm just yanking your chain. My new name is Hannah and I do love palindromes. I was thinking of legally changing my name to Hannah, but I settled on something similar and cool. But I do think about the fun I could have had, talking to my ex and having him call me by my new name. I am evil in my own way, and proud of it.

I remember thinking when I got this name that it was special. That I was the only one getting that name (well at least right then.) That God had let these temple workers know what my "real" name was and that I had just learned it. While no one said that was the case, this was what I was lead to believe. That it was my special name.

Eli

F, I'm a Manning brother. And not the one with all the records.

When I found out about the name thing, it was like "After all I've learned about the church. I'm not surprised." Just one more thing that was a lie to me.

BTW I'm impressed so many can remember the exact day they went through. I have NO clue. I know it was right before my mission, but it was the end of my senior year in High school and I was busy. It was May or June 1996.

Your new name belongs to you. It doesn't belong to your family, it doesn't belong to their church. It's yours to do with as you please, and for anyone else to take offense at your treatment of your own property is just silly. It's a personal matter and it doesn't involve them.

Mine was Lydia. I liked it okay. It shows up in my pedigree chart, and I'd been wondering about that ancestor just prior to my endowment, so it seemed mystical at the time.

My husband's niece and hubby just named their daughter that Lydia, so I hear it often. It's a very odd feeling.

St George temple, march 13(?) 1985.

That secret name thing can be very powerful for someone just leaving.

I recall vividly at one of the early exmo conferences in Las Vegas in the late 90s, there was a small group discussing future plans for the exmormon movement. One newly out person had some great ideas, but didn't trust everybody else completely, thinking that someone might be a plant from the church. He would not divulge his ideas until everybody had revealed their temple new name, since no believing Mormon would do that.

He later became quite active and prominent among exmormons. (Admin will know who I'm talking about! :-) )

How would this person know if the "plant" simply made up the name. It was Noah, or Mark, or whatever. I suppose would not know but the thought made him feel better.

I joke around with my name on occasion.
