Might I offer the following

Our personal testimonies are based on the witnesses of the spirit, not on any combination or accumulation of historical facts....no alteration of historical facts can shake our testimony.

Criticism is objectionable when directed to church authorities. It does not matter that the criticism is true.

Dallin Oaks from an article in the Salt Lake Tribune 18 August 85 page 2B

Did Elder Oaks really say "no *alteration* of historical facts can shake our testimony."

If so, it seems he's implying that any counter-evidence to the church is either a misinterpretation or is manufactured.

This type of statement will be read by the faithful that all of the ugly truth is manufactured.

This was sent to Lowry Nelson back in 1947; when he had the audacity to ask the first presidency to reconsider their stance on Blacks and the priesthood. He said that as a social ology professor (and just after having come out of WWII where the world had fought against Hitler and his anti-Semitism and racism) that there was no reason for Blacks to not be included as full members into the church.

George A. Smith said, "We feel very sure that you understand well the doctrines of the Church. They are either true or not true. Our testimony is that they are true. Under these circumstances we may not permit ourselves to be much impressed by the reasonings of men however well-founded they may seem to be. We would like to say this to you in all kindness and all sincerity that you are too fine a man to permit yourself to be to be led off from the principles of the Gospel by worldly learning.
