Older men (church leaders) feeling threatened by their age

While talking to a couple of old, crotchety farts at work (I am close to that point myself), at it struck me how defensive they tend to be and how jealous they are of the young guys. The sun is setting on their lives and they seem to be angry at the world because they are no longer in their prime.

I haven't had a lot of time to parse this situation but I wonder if there might be a similar issue with the GAs and their god-like demeanor. This is their last hurrah and they refuse to have budge as the leadership position is about all they have left to look forward to in life.
