We all know of Laban's sword, the angel with the flaming sword, and the one held by one of those guys in the old BOM pictures. Swords were the primary weapon of the Knight's Templars. Masons also use them in their rites. It certainly looks like the Morg deliberately inserted swords into their stories. Anyone remember more examples?

Sword of Laban

Sword of Poligamy (Joe's angel with sword)

Sword of Ammon (used to cut of the arms off the robbers)

There must be more.....

And lets not forget.....these aren't clubs with obsidian stuck in them like ALL the native indians in the americas used.....these were steel swords!!!

And swords were still a very popular and useful weapon in Josephs day.

Now if he would have said an angel with a "light saber" appeared and commanded me to bone your wife....that would have been prophetic.

I was very animatedly telling the story to a group of eight year olds. One of the kids happened to be Hugh Nibley's youngest daughter Zina. She was still skeptical at that point, and said very loudly, 'Put a toothpick in my eye and make me cry!'

She's been teaching at BYU for years. Too bad I played a part in her conversion. Her family of origin was so disfunctional. I felt sorry for her.

I will now interpret the swords of Mormonism:

The sword... Is a phallus.

That is all. Thank you for your attention.

I agree completely.
It's phallic all the way.

There used to be a real sword somehow in the temple ceremony. I saw a pic of it in a secretly taken photo someone took inside the SLC temple about 100 years ago.

This picture and words of JS fit the sword theme quite nicely. I think he was a bit obsessive about that whole sword thing.

such an interesting topic...,doesn't have a phallic note to it at all! +wink wink* right?! 34 wives....i'd say its quirky in obsession indeed!

Masons still use swords with their ceremonies though.

The word "sword" occurs 75 times in the Book of Mormon.

Of course, we know now that "sword" meant "macahuitl" and "steel" meant "obsidian."

He argues Joseph was deeply traumatised by his painful leg surgery -- hence the obsession with swords, baptism at the same age (eight), etc.:
