From an associated press article.

"On 12 June 1967, interracial marriages became legal in all states.

Today one in six new marriages are interracial."

Perhaps the church policy to marry within your race, culture and social standing will keep these folks free from their clutches.

Since there's only one human race, I have to wonder what those 1 in 6 are marrying...? :)

I look forward to the day we can toss the *cultural* idea of "race," and just start dealing with the human race as, well, human beings. Something mormonism did and still does not want to see happen...

My wife is Chinese. I had no idea the church was teaching people to marry within heir own race. How silly, sounds like the Nazis.

It's been taught for many years. Not only your own race but social class and culture.

So it's not just racism, they are against the poor too.

Sounds like most traditional cultures and tribes around the world.

highly amusing.

Racism is a social concept, not a scientific one.

That's only been 50 years ago when it became legal to intermarry?

In my mostly Mormon town where I grew up there was an interracial couple during that decade. They had five children, and the father was a lawyer in town.

My mom used to tell us the difficulty and pressure they and their family endured because one was black, the other a blonde Caucasian.

Eventually they ended up divorcing. Sad they had to endure any racism.

Until 1967, when the US Supreme Court ruled in the Loving vs. Virginia case, legality of interracial marriage depended on the individual states. (Prior to the Loving decision, some states did not prevent racial intermarriage.)

This used to happen a great deal, especially since some states had a "one drop" rule: If someone had "one drop" of black, or otherwise non-white (Native American, Asian, etc.) blood in their ancestry, then they were legally defined as "not white." (This generally meant that they could not marry white partners in those states, and/or they could not reside in those states even if their marriages had been legal in the [prior] states where those marriages had been locally-legally entered into.)
