This is going to hurt the Mormon Icelandic branches with their dozen members.

I think the Hindus etc. have a good idea. If you've got different kinds of gods and you can worship some or all throughout your life, then you don't get into the godawful "my god is the one and only true god and I'm going to blow you up unless you agree with me" kind of thing.

For example, life might be better if Egyptians still worshipped the sun god?

I like it when religions are culturally relevant.

Ya mean like Utard and Iyhoe spud diggers ministering to hungry Hutus by teaching them to become fishers of spuds as well as men that they may thrive on fish and chips?

I loved this quote in the story:

"We see the stories as poetic metaphors and a manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology.”

Some Icelanders. Far from a majority. Far from a sizeable minority, even.

Actually, we don't know much about how and what the old Norse- and Icemen actually worshipped. The stories/myths that we still have are probably just a small selection. I for my part cannot see how they can be converted to metaphors and manifestation of the forces of nature and human psychology. That will take a lot of creative adaptation.

Yes - just some of it, and I have read all the stories that are extant. The information we have is not enough to reconstruct the ancient worship, but it can serve as inspiration to construct some new kind of belief.

As you probably know, "Give me that old-time religion" is one of this Pagan's favorite songs!

Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I'm old-fashioned, say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock 'n' roll
