Doesn't matter. In 50 years from now, TSCC will absolutely swear that they never said the BOM was a real history of real people, or the golden plates were a real thing JS had or "translated" from or that they ever taught anything other than it was received by JS through a rock in his hat. DNA, the internet and historical and linguistic science has made it so they just can no longer spout off the nonsense about real Lamanites or real plates or real history and say "that's our story and we're st-st-st-sticking to it."
They're in a race against time. They need us oldsters who were taught this stuff to die off before too many millinneals call them on the BS. They're trying to turn it into a mainstream Christian sect but still want the income stream from the temple scam. It is really kind of fascinating to watch them navigate those waters.
The LDS church has not done so well with caring for their elderly. I think they really do want them to die off, so they can alter the Mormon story and thus become respectable to the Christian community. What a dirty trick!
