Many years ago I had a minor operation.

The local bishop came by to see how I was doing.

I had been sleeping on the couch and the pillow I had been using had blood on it. I was dizzy and really didn't want visitors, but tried to be polite.

As they left the bishop asked if he could do anything to help.

I said yes, can you take out the trash? I can't walk very well still.

He chuckled and left.

Terrible!

That's how many function. They say mindless dribble as a way to make themselves feel better.

It reminds me of my father's final word when I went home teaching with him.

"If you need anything, don't hesitate to call"

Of course, Dad was always at work, as well as my Mom. There were a bunch of teenage Goops yakking on the phone. We had very few "Sister So-and-so needs this and that" because they message rarely got through to us.

Apparently the trash took itself out.

You were probably the first person to actually have something that he could do to help you!

In the Relief Society, we used to have women say, "We should go to lunch together, sometime." We all knew that it was insincere, nothing was meant by that. (The Hollywood answer to "Let's do lunch" was "I'll have my people call your people, and we'll set something up."

My best friend had a fun answer to the RS ladies, which was, "OK, great! How about Saturday...would noon work for you?"and she would open up her calendar. It was so much fun to watch the deer-in-the-headlights look on the RS lady's face, when she would stammer, and try to back-pedal out of it.

The next time a Mormon says to me, "Can we do anything to help?" I'm going to answer them.

"Can you take out the trash," is the perfect answer!

.....When my mother got older and was living alone, she always said "Can you mow my lawn?" just to hear the Mormons sputter and make excuses.
