We've got a problem, in that the peat is burning and proving difficult to extinguish. We have parched ground from our dry and hot weather.

Hopefully the army will be able to help.

This happened before...if I recall, the solution that worked was to surround the burning part, cut out a "fire break" of peat around that part, and let the middle burn itself out...

Otherwise, there's no stopping it!

7 fires over a huge area making containment quite a challenge. We've got smoke but we're not in the danger zone. Poor folks nearby evacuated bless them. We definitely need the army to help with this as it is getting quite dire this evening. No rain in the forecast.

So frightening! If they tell you to evacuate, run like hell. I’ve worked on evacuations and was surprised at how many people resist leaving their homes.

I'm about an hour and a half south of you briggy.

Fire looks awful. Unfortunately it's forecast high temps and dry weather for at least a week.

Really hope they can at least contain it and no one gets hurt.

burning peet can be lots worse than a forest fire as I recall. But it's England so rain should come in a day or two?

I am sorry for the animals (I always think of the animals), and for everyone who is affected, or might potentially be affected "if the winds turn" (I don't know what the British, peat fire equivalent, of this is).

Starting when I was three, when we moved from central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley, wildfires have been part of my consciousness, and I deeply empathize with everyone who is part of these fires now.

Peat fires seem scarier, because there is so much, seemingly limitless, available fuel for them, and I can't imagine what it would be like to be personally affected.
