Nothing in Nelson's recent "impression" (his characterization of it) has any logical consistency to it.

"Mormon" is bad because it does not expressly refer to Jesus Christ.

"LDS" is bad because it does not expressly refer to Jesus Christ.

"Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" is good because it expressly refers to Jesus Christ.

"Latter-day Saint" is good, even though it does not expressly refer to Jesus Christ. But don't forget that "LDS" is still bad, even though it stands for "Latter-day Saint." (Maybe it's too close to LSD?)

"The Church" is good even though it does not include an express reference to Jesus Christ. (Remember the Church of Satan is also called the Church by it's adherents.)

These changes are all necessary because.. living prophet guy. But all other previous living prophet guys didn't think that it was important and many of them reveled and luxuriated in the words "Mormon" and "LDS" and celebrated their use at every turn.

Don't try to find any logic in any of it, or your head will start spinning...slowly at first, like Linda Blair in the Exorcist, but then gathering speed...faster and faster and faster until it generates an electromagnetic field that creates an opening into the spirit world that you can walk through, bypassing the birth-death cycle that has heretofore affected us all....Ah! Now I know what Nelson is up to.... That sly dog!"

There's logic to the changes, but the logic keeps changing.

Part of it is the need for prophets to change things. Another part is the attempt to mainstream and the concomitant need to adopt a name that emphasizes Jesus Christ.

So the church decided to drop the name Mormon several years ago and go with LDS. Then the polygamy thing became prominent and the FLDS were getting lots of attention and people confused the FLDS and the LDS, which was embarrassing and hurt the missionary effort.

So "Mormon" came back. Now that the FLDS fiasco is in the past, the church wants to go back to mainstreaming. So Russ has a chance to make his mark. It is only a matter of time, though, before God tells some prophet to go back to LDS or Mormon or something else.

It's all quite silly.

Probably, it’s dementia.

Exactly. All these people are trying to figure out the deeper meaning of it and forgetting it comes from a 94-year-old.

But their public explanations of what they're trying to do really don't make any sense.

"Hey, don't call me 'Mormon' because that leaves out the name of Jesus Christ...and that's what's really important, you know, the name of Jesus Christ...so from now on you should call me a 'Latter-day Saint'."

"Huh? Call you what? A 'Latter-day Jesus Christ Saint'?"

"No, just 'Latter-day Saint'."

"Mmmm...okay, whatever."

really have always wanted to be holding a martini glass (with Sprite in it) at fancy parties for big shots from various organizations and feel like they're fully respected and in their element with fellow elites--instead being the guys who make their followers purchase and wear funny underwear.

But they're stuck between a peepstone and a hard place. If they get rid of everything that makes Mormons feel unique and special, they risk losing massive numbers of members. Without having a big flock to preside over, they won't be big shots.

But if they keep the flock feeling special and unique, they'll keep being the oddballs when they find themselves rubbing elbows with other big-shot leaders of big organizations.

What to do? What to do?

I don’t think it’s that dire. The recent reaction to the name change proves that members will tolerate anything, no matter how nonsensical. The leadership could come clean in one fell swoop and not lose many. Since they are ultra conservative, they would do it in stages. As with everything else, after the horse has left the barn.

you see, it is totally OK with Jesus when a sheep is used to represent Him for a sacrifice, He even likes it ......but it has to be a MALE sheep or Jesus is deeply offended

I read today [in the trib] that the UTA would have cost 50 million.
The article said TMC's rebranding would be exponentially higher.

Think 500,000,000 [500 million]+

The profit says it doesn't matter what it'll cost.
The MORMON 'church' of WASTE, contempt, sloth and idolatry.

It would be nice if they spent that money feeding the hungry children of their converts in Africa. Paying tithes hasn't made their parents rich yet.

Yes, but it's better to take from the poor and rich (except ugly-rich mormon misleaders) - as long as you're taking - than to give, because once you start giving, it's hard to stop... because you start to care.

Mormonism doesn't care, because it doesn't have a heart [to], or a brain... because it too may lead to a heart. face-LDS-face can't face both ways, much less the music.

First they threw Brigham under the bus. Now they've thrown Mormon Heavenly Father himself under the bus. Anything to keep from throwing Joseph Smith under the bus because they must save him at all costs.

Without Joseph, there is nothing. They have staked their claim to a scamming sleaze ball and now they are stuck with it. Talk about selling your souls to the devil! Well, they probably wish they could at this point except the devil is as missing in action as Heavily Father.

Whats an old prophet to do? "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," as the Oscar winning song goes.
