So I was doing a bit of research into Chau and the Sentinelese and ran into this interesting article.

https://www.firstpost.com/india/anthropologist-madhumala-chattopadhyay-recounts-being-first-woman-to-establish-contact-with-sentinelese-jarawa-tribes-5652441.html

If you look into the other tribes she visited you can see the need to keep the Sentinelese protected. The Jarawa have not done well with "civilization". Now, they are used for "Human safaris".

This is a fascinating article on a subject that, otherwise, would be really difficult for those of us outside the sub-continent to learn anything about--a woman (she is unique in India, her home country) who had an enormous amount to do with what we DO know about the Andaman Islands, the Sentinelese, and the Jarawas. [She is the only "outsider" known to have had hand-to-hand (in a manner of speaking) "contact" with the Sentinelese.]

As a woman (and, therefore, not so threatening from the viewpoint of the tribal members), she was allowed access that no "outside" male has likely ever had, certainly not for recent centuries.

Thank you for this, Susan!!

:)

Good article. She lays out a clear case for why efforts to retrieve the missionary's body would be a mistake, stating that several deaths on both sides would likely ensue.

I notice that the Jarawa tribe got measles. There is a good reason why these tribes should be left alone.

Also a very good reason why sending missionaries into cultures they barely understand or comprehend the danger they are placing themselves into is something that placing prohibitions on those countries should be mandatory for their safety and welfare. It's naivete to send a 26 year old man into that culture he doesn't understand and expect him to return home unharmed and alive.

seems like the North Sentinelese Islanders have a very strict immigration policy ~

But they like women more than men.
