Terminology suggestion

Just a thought. Don't say you researched church history. Tell them you did some fact checking.

Nah. Research implies deep diving and study. A goal, a project, a thesis. Which is how I'd characterize my relationship with the information I am engaging with.

"Research" often means "stuff I looked up on Google earlier" these days. ;)

I'd argue that is actually what "fact checking" means. It's what I thought of when weighing the suggestion of the OP.

I get it. Choosing the right words sometimes changes everything.

How about, "You are going to be shocked when you do your own fact-checking/researching! That's all I'm sayin'."

Make it a casual dare. Tempt them to prove you wrong cuz they can't stand to not know what you claim to have found out? Worth a try? I dunno.

Most would rather use the church as a white cane than open their eyes.
