Dallin and Petersen are not six of one and half a dozen of the other.
I do think the actions of those claiming to speak on God's behalf deserve scrutiny.
Petersen was a product of his time and his views on homosexuality, masturbation, and racism were not far from a large portion of the rest of the country. That was my era and Mormon views weren't all that unusual. By today's standards Petersen's views are beyond appalling. His words did do damage. And yes, there was a smug superiority to them even as he layered them with "Mormon love".
Oaks was pretty much on the same page as Petersen. His words however bore a special arrogance. Didn't even try to gild with Mormon love. He had ratcheted things up a notch. But Oaks went Petersen one better when he authorized the Electro-Shock treatments and devastating coercion on my gay friends at BYU in the early seventies.
There is a meanness to Oaks that I never saw with Petersen and Petersen came to lunch at our house after dedicating our Chapel in the early sixties.
