I like the song “Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish, but I noticed nearly every radio stationed censors “damn” out of the chorus. Is that standard for radio stations or are people here really that offended by the mildest of swears?

It is a mind control ploy

I don't know if they still do, but years ago there were companies that would "cleanse" your movies for you. My Monstrously TBM to the Max brother used to take his videos, or what ever the media was, to this place and they would erase all the bad parts so they could still watch the popular movies of the day without inviting Satan to sit on the couch with them to view. I remember one was "Crocodile Dundee". That seemed rather benign to me but needed to be scrubbed clean anyway. This was in Colorado but I know Utah had plenty of places to baptize the sins out of your movies as well.

I would assume that any TV channel in Utah would fin it expedient to play to the heavily Mormon audience if they want to keep their advertising dollars flowing in. So for any out of work Censor Specialists--Check out Utah for some employment opportunities.

Wow that’s absolute madness.

I find it a tad hypocritical as well.

When "Titanic" hit VHS, I recall a news story of a Utah outfit that would "fix" that part of the movie where Jack and Rose are alluded to be doing the nasty. The news piece showed a fellow at an editing machine that shot ribbons of offensive VHS tape into the air. He would splice the ends together, rewind, and start on another. The floor was ankle deep in tape.

Sheesh....

Then he, or someone, would splice all the pieces on the floor together, and have their own, custom movie.

The company was called CleanFlicks, and a lawsuit from movie makers put them out of business. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CleanFlicks

BYU's Varsity theater also used to censor "offensive" film content. Legal concerns stomped on that too.

It would have been ironic if either of them ever had "Cinema Paradiso" among their offerings.

But Cinema Paradiso was pornography. I saw shoulders!

Yeah, it was a Utah County (surprise) company called "Clean Flicks". They ignored many cease and desist orders from Sony, Disney and a conglomerate of other production companies and directors for violating copyright laws. They got sued into oblivion and lost court battles, filed for bankruptcy and went away.

I remember being at BYU when the Olivia Newton John song "Physical" was banned on Utah airwaves -

I graduated a few months later and couldn't leave the state fast enough.

"Fix" movies so they don't have the "nasty" parts in them. I took my kids to see "Gladiator" when they were in middle school. Their school teacher, who was also mormon, played the sound track in their classes and asked if anyone knew what the music was from. My 2 kids were the only ones who did.

I hate to say my daughter not thinks things need to be censored. She said that they now have a censored S_____tt's Creek and so she is finally able to watch it.

Is this a Utah thing?

It's a mormon thing. Plenty of Utahn's have no problem watching movies with strong language and some nudity.

I guess that's STRONG language and SOME nudity.

Reminds me of The Who's "Who Are You". Our FM stations have always played the original version.

In Germany, radio stations play totally uncensored music in English. It's not at all uncommon to hear the f bomb unleashed in all its profane glory. I think it's hilarious.

It could be a FCC rule.
