A historical science fiction story about Jews who traveled to the American continent after the second destruction of Jerusalem, and their adventures. Poorly written, with excessive use of "It came to pass" and extensive quoting from The Bible. Very difficult to follow as a narrative and the span of the story is too long with little story arc and an extensive flashback that is irrelevant to the story line. Joseph Smith built a cult religion(Mormons) around the book much like L Ron Hubbard built a cult (Scientology) around the book Dianetics.
Orson Scott Cards "Homecoming" series retells the story better, without the religious dogma that has grown up around the Book of Mormon.
I give one star for the ability to fool millions for almost two centuries.

Firstly, what I find appalling is the fact that Joseph Smith, Jr. sent a trusted friend to Canada to sell the manuscript of the Book of Mormon. If the Book of Mormon is your church's sacred text, why would you attempt to sell the manuscript?
Secondly, the bishop admonished to read the Book of Mormon from cover to cover. Being the obedient person I was, I read it from cover to cover. I read it as a travel log because I couldn't grasp on to it as being scripture. It lacked spirituality and, as hard as I tried to develop a sense of unity with it and the Bible, I just could not make the connection with the Book of Mormon being the "Second Witness of Jesus Christ."
According to the storyline, there was a battle between the Lamanites and the Nephites in which millions perished. Other ancient cultures have remains of their civilizations: Foundations of their homes and fortifications, battle implements, and even skeletal remains. There are no such remains that parallel the stories within the Book of Mormon.
I am truly sorry that I could not present a more positive review. I tried my best to incorporate the Book of Mormon into my life.
