The Maldives has a divorce rate of 11 divorces per 1000 people per year -- the highest in the world. By comparison, the US (third highest divorce rate) has 4 divorces per 1000 per year. Why so many divorces in the Maldives?

The Maldives might also have time-limited marriages, since these are common in certain Muslim countries like Iran.

A time-limited marriage is where two people get married for ONLY a specified time: could be one day, or one week, or a month...or whatever they need to go on a vacation to Europe or wherever. During that time, they are a married couple, so they can have sex without running afoul of the civil laws which are often draconian about non-marital sex.

Although the ages of the people involved can be "anything" so long as those people are legally allowed to get married, I have read that this is particularly prevalent with widows and "regular" (they meant their prior marriage(s) to be lasting) divorcees.

If the Maldives has time-limited marriages, then it means nothing more than ordinary, dating American couples having a relationship with each other which includes sex.

I agree with you about the legalism of both the LDS Church and Islam, however. The same is true for Ultra-Orthodox Jews as well.

That is a myth. To get a divorce in Nevada you have to be a resident for at least 45 days prior to the divorce. I don't know of any BYU student who is willing to do a legal stay in Nevada for 45 days and do the paperwork and pay the fees to get a divorce.

The Islamic Mutta marriage (time limited marriage) is - IIRC - predominantly shiite, and is limited to a few Islamic countries, where Shia dominates.

A woman can say it a hundred times and she's still married. A woman's right to initiate a divorce must be stated in the marriage contract or approved by a judge.
