I was in Fuji shi in the winter of '77, but transferred down to Nagoya just before the creation of Tokyo South. Were you from the Tokyo or Nagoya mission when it was created?

I was Nagoya 1976-1978.

Came in right after the split. Might've been one of the first groups. My first couple of comps talked highly of the Nagoya mission and came from there.

Ichinomiya was my first city, followed by Ogaki and then a couple of Nagoya apartments. I finished 77 in Fuji.

When you say "French East Mission," you're really showing your age. My SIL went there, too. She recently passed away.

I went to the Florence-based "Great Italian Mission" (it had been just the "Italian Mission," but Hartmon Rector officially changed the name), 1969-1971. I was originally called for 2 1/2 years, but ended up in the first class of LTM students on a 2-year stint. My draft number came up while I was out there on a deferment, so I didn't have to go to Vietnam.

One of my brothers served in Paris and Versailles, France mission.

Was that considered part of the East mission?

He was there from 1974-76. Not a single convert the entire time. But loved France and the warm people he met there.

Yes, all those areas. Extended SW across France. Included Toulouse, Lyon, Cote d'Azur, Marseille. Also included French-speaking Switzerland. Mission home was in Geneva. Presidents in my time were Henry Moyle Jr. followed by James Martin.

Yeah, my SIL was in Mulhouse and Strassbourg most of her time. She used to say that they rode mopeds. Possible, I guess. I know of other oldies who say they rode mopeds in their missions.

In the early part of my mission (spring of 1962), we rode Lambretta motor scooters. Some missionaries rode Velo Solex (see link) which were black bikes with small, front-wheel drive "assist" motors. Several months after I arrived, motorized transport was scrapped altogether due to safety and expense issues. We were required to purchase bicycles, which I rode 'til the end of my mission.

Nagoya Japan, 1996-1998

The only good thing about the church and my mission is that I got a Japanese wife and six half-Japanese children out of it!

FYI: I met my wife after my mission in Edmonton, Canada. I baptized her myself. Without my Japanese speaking ability, it would have never happened. I tell my wife that our relationship came into existence due to an overwhelming number of lies!

I was in the Nagoya mission from 1976-1978. I knew and really admired a missionary from Edmonton there. His name was Ken Bateman and have always wanted to know what became of him. Ever heard of him?

England Bristol Mission 88-90.

In the era where Jeff Holland was the Area President, and would routinely come to the mission to berate the missionaries for not being spiritual enough, obedient enough, or just not enough of anything that could be considered virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy....

I left right before his famous pulpit pounding, foaming at the mouth, spittle producing rant that included the line "if this mission were a horse, I'd have it shot!"

That being said, I went to the Concepcion Chile mission, 76-78

I was in the so-called Great Italian Mission. Of course, my life sucked and I need to somehow get those two years back before I die. But the nice thing at that time was how our mission included all of Italy and the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland. My first city was Lugano, Switzerland, and I was there for 7 months. Back then you could get a transfer from Catania, Sicily, all the way up to Lugano, Switzerland, and be 2 days on the road. I did a 2-day transfer once from Torino (northwestern Italy) to Cagliari, Sardinia, taking a train to Genova, an overnight ferry to Porto Torres, Sardinia, and most of a day on a train down to Cagliari. It was a beautiful trip, but really went bad with my new comp and our bad apartment. We had contact with the mission president maybe twice a year.
