Is the LDS Church just a business with a religion attached to it?

Considering all of the land holdings in Florida and the malls, etc. I have heard the LDS Church described as a business with a church attached to it. Does that strike anyone else as true or is it simply going too far?

Yes.
Joseph Smith was in the real estate business. Buying cheap and selling at confiscatory prices to new arrivals in Nauvoo.
The 15 are simply carrying on the family business.

A real estate empire using religion as a tax dodge. Scientology does the same thing.

If it's not a tax dodge, why is the church secretive about its finances? Most churches are open about where the donations are going, because it's only fair.

I think it's a reasonable description of the organization. The church is far more concerned with extracting money from its members than it is about their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being.

By their fruits ye shall know them.
