This is what bugs me...

Can't I just do genealogy because I want to do it, not because God wants me to do it?

Millions do genealogy with out having a connection to Mormonism.

You don't have to submit the info to the church.

Do it. Have fun. Relish being a descendant of a pirate, a mediaeval knight, a famous inventor or an adventurous wanderer.

Yup. Ancestry is fascinating. Dead dunking not so much.

And I find being kind works the same way. It might even work better when you do it just because you want to and not because you were assigned. And you can even use kindness on anybody--not just other Mormons or potential converts. Who knew?

Personally, I hate genealogy. I think it is because of the LDS church.

I have no interest whatsoever. My mind closes off when people bring it up.
