In these days I talked with a RM, who was a very good friend of mine when he was a Missionary and I noticed that he change a lot, to be honest me too but I haven't become the ExMo version of him.
Now I have to be super tolerant in order to have a peaceful conversation.
And I think the BYU environment is brainwashing him so bad that I sometimes can't recognize him as my friend.

There is hope. I went to BYU and bought into the church hook, line and sinker. Now look at me. :)

I hope that he wont become a dick.
But he has already told me that he is with some kind of people and not with the other kind. Which sounds too much TBM for me.

It forces one to either take the red or blue pill.

I wasn't a Mormon when at school, but I was stuck at San Diego State (which isn't a bad school, it's just that it forced me to live at home, with my horrible mother.)

My longtime good buddy since elementary school was already attending UCLA, which was just far away from home that the parents could stay in touch but not be nuisances. We were both majoring in Spanish. She sent me a full application packet. I filled it out promptly and sent it back.

In the meantime, for you, work hard to get the best grades you can. They are your bargaining chips, and you want to bring as much as you can to the bargaining table.

I was accepted at UCLA on such a great scholarship that my mother, who would have screamed "NO!" at the top of her lungs, could not turn it down. It covered just about everything - tuition, dorm housing, books, you name it. About all I had to do was show up.

It was a glorious adventure - and best of all, it was far enough from Mother that she ceased to be an annoyance. My longtime friend became my roommate, and we took most of our classes together. We were extremely competitive, so the two of us always had the best grades in our classes, neck-and-neck with each other, and pretty far ahead of the rest of the crowd.

Whatever extra money I needed for pens, pencils, notebooks, an occasional item of clothing, snacks for our dorm room, and stuff like that came out of $134/month I got from Social Security, as my father had passed away. I made that $134 stretch until it begged for mercy.

I loved UCLA. It was the right learning environment for me. But even more, it was a secure refuge from my horrible mother, and at that time in my life, I needed that, as much as I needed a good education.

Get the best, shiniest grades you can, right where you are, so you have something to trade with. Then, start looking into "away" colleges. They may be in-state, or out-of state. But plan ahead, turn yourself into a highly marketable candidate and you can do it.

Make it your goal to turn yourself into an applicant they can't say "no" to. It may feel fraudulent, like you are just playing a part. But Adam, it could very possibly be your ticket OUT.

This plan worked for me, and it worked for several other people I have known over the years. Plan as if your life depended on it, take it in small steps, and GO for it.

BYU: An LDS dating and marriage pool, cleverly disguised as an institute of higher learning.

Have to agree with Atari. You would be surprised to learn that BYU ends up having the opposite of its intended effect to many, many students, far more than BYU and the Church would ever care to admit. Yep, by the end of my mission, my testimony was on life support. Thinking that BYU would nurse it back to health, all attending school there did was put my testimony out of its misery once and for all.

That's the purpose of BYU.

Had a great experience at BYU and also met my wife.

Despite the good experience, now that we are out we don't like to admit we went to BYU. I know, kinda immature, but you get put into the Mormon box and people have certain expectations as soon as you say BYU. You are also admitting you were dumb enough to stay in the LD$ Inc cult for a while.

Have to agree with both the yin and yang of the post by perky. I had a great time at BYU. Got a great education which resulted in admission to a combined MD/PhD program at the University of Illinois. BYU was also the place that started me down the road to apostasy...a great thing. This was in the early 80’s and I spent hours in the Special Collections library nurturing my doubts. I read Quinn’s masters thesis on the LDS hierarchy, which has been expanded into his currently published three volume magnum opus.
I also find it annoying to have to discuss my time at BYU because it seems to require a clarification that I’m not “one of them anymore.” However, engaging in that clarification with a glass of wine adds a bit of relish to the conversation.
BYU is a different place than when I attended there. We had the Seventh East Press (at least for awhile), Sunstone was sold in the BYU Bookstore and there wasn’t such an emphasis on using the manual—at least I never got in trouble for not teaching out of it in Elder’s Quorum.

Have you ever wondered why the BYU Football team is practically invincible and probably the most powerful team to ever play football ever? Its because they have the blessings of the Restored Gospel in their lives to teach them how to do things, they have the Gift of the Holy Ghost to lead/guide them in every situation of life (including on how to perform on each/every play of the game), and they have priesthood power which frankly, presuming its real power, ought to scare all the other teams. I know its been taught in Church that Heavenly Father doesn't care much on how well any sports team does. But in this case I know that the hundreds of millions of tithes and other offerings that Heavenly Father has poured BYU Football is a testament to how this wonderful program can help give people more evidence of how gloriously true the Church really is :)

I did a google search this morning to see how they were doing this year. But it seems like Satan may have caused the results to be full of all sorts of anti-Mormon numbers and negativity. So I closed my browser quickly as to avoid having any Doubts enter my mind as the great holy man Dieter Uchtdorf has told us to doubt our Doubts. Surely BYU is 6-0 and has won all their games over the 2nd-7th best teams in the country by numerous touchdowns. And besides I don't have much time to find sports scores because of so many other things I need to do to be obedient to the Brethren. I should probably be spending my time instead obediently on missionary work by showing people how truthful/honest the Church is so they'll want to pray to know that its true - i.e. truthful/honest. Being so non-clueless is such a blessing towards helping the Church grow :)

That was a statement a fare I had made a few years ago. What makes it noteworthy is he used to teach at the University of Utah and is now a high profile writer/academic often appearing in the Washington Post (yes,he has a PhD).

I confirmed all this via Google, but I'll keep his identity confidential for obvious reasons.

How does BYU do it? Well, to borrow from Robert Frost, "The answer is compartmental."

Defintion of a "Mormon Loser" at BYU...

A: An RM who can't get a handjob at a singles' ward social...

Definition of "Celestial Mormon Loser":

Can't get one and refuses "self relief."

"Terrestial Mormon Loser":

Succumbs to self abuse but confesses to Bishop...

Telestial Mormon Loser:

Also indulges in self-relief, but doesn't tell anyone

Outer Darkness anyone?

The LDS couple* who jerk the guy off before penetration, believing that to be an effective form of birth control.
