Farmington, Ut (north of Salt Lake City and certainly one of the most mormon areas in the state, which isn't saying much) is getting a new high school this fall.

A good, righteous father (and you just know he's of the faith) has made a big deal where there was none, about the name of the school mascot.

As always, the comments from the peanut gallery are very interesting.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah, that reminds me of those days or yore in Orem when the new high school was being built. A contest was held for the name. The winner was Rocky Mountain High. The Alpine School Board, in all its sanctimonious holier than thou-ness thought it alluded to the drug culture and so nixed that and called it what they had already decided they wanted it to be anyway - Lincoln High (the original Orem High School name back in the early 20th century).
Of course there was a big snit about it but the school district would not back down. So they compromised and called it Mountain View.

Utah is such a silly place.

HAHA. So ridiculous.

So the good people of Farmington are unable to pronounce correctly, spell correctly and be aware of the history of the Phoenix?

This is a little insulting to them considering that a Phoenix is a very popular iconic symbol and even has songs about it. Rise Like a Phoenix! (Although, that would work just as well with the other word.). :). There is phoenix this and phoenix that everywhere.

Perhaps the residents of Phoenix, Arizona should be aware that they would be wise to change their name as well so that sometime, somewhere, some misinformed person doesn't refer to the town as Penis, Arizona.

I don't think "Prude" is going to make a very nice replacement mascot. Stick with the Phoenix, Farmington.

There is already a bunch of Firebirds out there across the country as school mascots.

What a bunch of dicks. :)

edit:

I 'opened' my high school (freshman its first year of existence), and was on the student committee that chose the mascot.
We settled on "Sundevil."

Of course, a few local evangelicals vehemently opposed the "Satanic" name and symbol.

And, of course, they were ignored.

Sundevils to this day.

Speaking of which, I hear that the nice fall weather makes Penis, Arizona, a wonderful place to visit.

I heard that the population of Penis Arizona is considerably smaller when it's cold in the Winter.

That's hysterical.

A restaurant owner in Hurricane, Utah had a mascot on his rooftop of a bull with what looked like an upside down party hat in place where the bull's male anatomy would be.

Before:

It caused such an uproar in the community with the locals strongly objecting (their children passed by there daily on their way to school.)

Within weeks the restaurant owner had the mascot neutered, on his own accord. He decided he didn't like it, regardless of how others regarded it.

After:

Funny how the bull's eyes went from looking angry/aggressive (before pic) to dazed & confused (after pic).

Maladaptive, fearful people won't be happy until every penis on earth is destroyed.

People who have problems co-existing on the earth with genitalia must be very uncomfortable, and must be under constant stress, as long as they live in an earth-based body.

They seem to think that the penis is the perfect symbol of evil. Consequently, the earth is evil, and any good thing found in mortality is to be denied and shortened.

They have no idea that their reaction is totally created by themselves.

Hey Church Lady!

Actually, the guy has a point.

One of the reasons the University of North Dakota "Fighting Sioux" dropped the Sioux nickname was because one of the favorite chants of opposing team fans was "Sioux suck", which unfortunately has the perfect rhythm and sound for a good chant.

It was kind of hard to argue that that wasn't demeaning to the Sioux nation. Even so, rather a lot of the tribal members wanted to keep the nickname at the university.

So yeah, Phoenices. Not a good sound, though it would be an interesting lesson in Greek plurals. Or Latin. Whatever.

No they dropped "Fighting Sioux" because the NCAA made them. They had to have written approval of both tribes in ND to keep the name and one of the tribes said no.

However, NCAA ruling or not, their fans still refer to them as the Sioux.

I had to look up high schools in Blue Ball, Pennsylvania and Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

Much to my dismay, neither have schools that are named after the towns, more like Pequea Valley HS in Intercourse and Garden Spot HS in Blue Ball.

Didn't check on what they name their mascots.

If you lived in Blue Ball or Intercouse, you wouldn't name your high school after the town either :)

I died laughing when I read this story. I think people should go to the games and chant "We know you were phenises first!" or something like that. No need to live this down if you are a rival school.
