Ok why are Mormons offended by the book of Mormon musical? They think it gives them a bad name Haha! I see nothing wrong with it but Mormons are offended by everything except knocking on your door!

They think it makes them look silly.

They don't get that they DO look silly -- without the musical.

Oddly, I don't see any outward condemnation of it--quite the opposite: they took out that huge ad in the program "Now That You've Seen the Musical, Read the Book." so they actually tried to use it as publicity, in a sense. But I am 100% sure the light-hearted responses you might hear from TSCC about it mask a deep hatred for it--I mean, it's supposed to be offensive!

On the other hand, the *one* confirmed conversion of an audience member backfired after she quit TSCC after about a year...

Is there any coverage of this backfired conversion?

There was mention of it on postmormon(dot)org and here, but only in passing.

The young lady in question was a theater major and the grandiose conversion was right in her wheelhouse, and of course the church played it up big time when happened, and she was prominently featured on mormon(dot)org, in the "...and I'm a mormon" section.

Her defection came to light when someone noted that her Instagram page was not 'mormonismish' and asked her about it. She provided a moderately flip response regarding no longer being a member. But her "...and I'm a mormon' page stayed active for months after that.

they hold dear and sacred.

I wanted desperately to see it, and bought tickets a year ahead of time, when it came to NM. (We have a smallish, not-quite-Broadway type theater, but we get most of the good musicals here.)

DH was kind enough to go with me, but he was angry and offended. He didn't like that the play openly mocked and made fun of things that had been sacred to him since childhood (he served a mission, too, and bought the whole package deal.)

Sensing this immediately during the play, I tried to stifle some of my laughs, but of course, people around us didn't, and DH was very much offended that so many people roared with laughter about things that were "sacred" to him.

I was kind of sorry I had asked him to go, but I don't really have anybody else I could have gone with, and I desperately wanted to see it. It's a great play for exmos. I'm not sure why a nevermo would want to see it. But for a believing Mo - not a good idea.

In fact...here are the lyrics from a few of my favorite lines..enjoy:

A warlord that shoots people in the face.
What's so scary about that?

I believe-
That the Lord God created the universe.
I believe-
That he sent his only son to die for my sins.
And I believe-
That ancient Jews built boats and sailed
to America.
I am a Mormon.
And a Mormon just believes.

I believe-
That God has a plan for all of us.
I believe-
That plan involves
Me getting my own planet.
And I believe
That the current President of the church,
Thomas Monson, speaks, directly to God.
I am a Mormon and, dang it,
A Mormon just believes.

That Satan has a hold of you.
I believe!
That the Lord God has sent me here!
And I believe that in 1978 God changed his mind about black people!!

I believe!
That God lives on a planet called Kolob!
I believe!
That Jesus has his own planet as well.
And I believe
That the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri.

available on You Tube. TBM DH says that Rannels (as Elder Price) would never "pass" for a real mish - his shirt isn't buttoned up to the Adam's apple, his hair is a little too fluffy, and he shows too much exuberance. Mishies are supposed to be more restrained and dignified. Oh, well.

Offended? Perhaps, not sure where you are getting your information from, but they have embraced it in the sense that they see it as a tremendous missionary opportunity. They set up some sort of display in some places, if they can, on the outside of the venues

Then the missionaries are not up on how much the church is using it as a missionary tool.

Imagine if it was the "Qu'ran On Broadway, The Musical"
How do you think Muslims would react if Parker/Stone mocked Muhamed/The Qu'ran/Islam instead of Joseph's Myth/The BOM/MORmONism?

Muslims would burn the theater down and drag the actors in the street, Mormons are cowards except knocking on your door

My question is, "How the hell did we end up living under this fear, to the extent that we self censor our speech, in order to appease a certain, very violent, faith?
No other faith has won the prize of stripping people of their right to freedom of speech.
Just because we all know Muslims kill people, who offend their beliefs. Secularism may die because we allow our enemies to intimidate us into silence.

Crazyhorse gave the answer! "Muslims would burn the theater down and drag the actors in the street"

It's not really 'intimidation' when there are no threats, just action. If the situation becomes kill or be killed, not many of us are going to give voice to what we're thinking.

MORmONS ARE cowards, Thank Goodness, or there would be a lot more instances like the Murder of Brenda Lafferty.

I saw the Book of Mormon musical.

Mormon's don't like the musical, bc the musical shows just how stupid their religion is. The whole musical makes fun of the church, and the musical is hilarious. At one point in the musical, someone is getting baptized and they liken it to someone losing their virginity.

The musical also shows that Mormonism is completely stupid and worthless when compared to the issues in Africa: Aids, poverty, hunger, war.

It makes fun of "The Sacred." And everything in Mormonism is sacred, and must receive respect from outsiders, even if Mormons refuse to reciprocate.

Therre's a lot of loose talk in this thread. ALL muslims would burn down the theatre and kill people?

None of the many muslims I know and appreciate would do this (or kill people trying to leave). People here rightly complain when sweeping generalizations are made about Christians. The same should apply to other faiths (and absence of faith, as in my case).

A bit more precision in your expression would be better.

Good point. Generalisations are unhelpful. I lived in a Muslim-majority country for nearly 20 years without any difficulty or hindrance.

When the fatwa came out about Salmon Rushdie (order for all Muslims to kill him) the only two Muslims at MSU in Bozeman MT were asked by a reporter if they would kill him, given the opportunity and they said, "Yes!" Taken from the Billings Gazette. So, in my admittedly limited experience, Muslims are 100% extremist.

When over 50 people died and over 695 people were injured in response to a YouTube video, The Innocence of Muslims,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactions_to_Innocence_of_Muslims

It's not unreasonable to expect that people would die if "The Koran on Broadway" were staged, along the same lines of "The Book of Mormon on Broadway".

Islam is the one religion you and I both know would elicit that kind of a response to being insulted. Why pretend otherwise?

The basic plot of "The Book of Mormon" is a TBM's wet dream.

A missionary goes out bent on gaining personal glory. But he
comes into contact with stark reality in the lives of those he's
"serving." This changes him and he acts out of pure love for
them and really loses himself in the work of ministering to their
needs. In the end the people's lives are enriched and many are
converted.

What's to not like about that?
