They bought a distressed casino on the north end of the strip. Carl Icahn flipped it and did well. Good luck to the Marriott's. It's not going to be easy.

BTW, Marriott is not mormon owned. They haven't been for decades. There is a Marriott casino here in Vegas already, in Summerlin.

They are a publicly traded corporation, which is 25% owned by the Marriott family, which is LDS. Bill Marriott is the Executive Chairman. Arne Sorenson is the current CEO. I think someone pointed out on here that he is not LDS. Not sure of his religious affiliation, but he did his undergraduate studies at a Lutheran university and he is a registered Democrat.

I stayed at the Downtown Marriott in Prague in 2010. They have a casino on the lobby level. Marriott is all about profits, just like the church. Marriott was the biggest supplier of hotel porn. They have mini bars. Gambling isn't against the WoW- like it matters.

Marriott is still wholly owned or at least ran by the Marriott family. If the Marriotts are partial owners of the corporation, they would be among the primary shareholders, and are the CEO's of Marriott still.

If they're CEO's, such as the president of the company is, then he owns controlling shares in the stock, and sits on the board as president, that is an inordinate amount of control by the family to this day - if the remaining 75% are fractured shares. Who has the controlling shares has control over the company. The decision making buck begins and ends with the president and chief CEO of the company, Mr. Marriott, Jr. He would have the largest say in the company.

It's a huge operation. What began as a mom and pop store in 1927 is a conglomerate now. Still, until he sells off his remaining interest and controlling shares, steps down and retires (or is replaced with another Marriott to take over as president and chief CEO,) that's an enormous amount of influence he still brokers as a Marriott. 25% of a corporation the size of Marriott is a controlling share ie, stake in the company. That's what I mean by influence.

Marriott is a large corporation that DOES NOT in anyway discriminate against gays people or anyone else for that matter . I have friends and family that work for Marriott and all say it is a great company to work for. Bill Marriott did not donate a dime on prop 8 . Some of folks here need to get your facts straight . Why not stay at a Marriott owned property when they are a company that is very much an equal opportunity employer .

What’s the present viewpoint of the church on playing the lottery? I vaguely remember it from the 80s. I can’t remember if they were against it totally ,or if they just didn’t except tithing money from the lottery. I can’t remember now if they considered it gambling, but I do remember something negative about the church and the lottery.
Seems hard to believe they would actually turn down money from anything. I don’t know anyone stupid enough to actually report it anyway ,if the church didn’t know about it.
(I wouldn’t even tell them my true salary ,if they didn’t know.)

Because it is considered gambling, it is treated as sinful wasteful spending.

There was a video the church prepared about the lottery in the 1980's or 90's I watched at church about the evils of playing the lottery, and why LDS shouldn't dabble in it. An example it used was an elderly man who played his life savings on one drawing, believing that increased his odds so much he had to win it big. Then he lost everything.

Lotteries are played primarily by poor, working class, and middle class people. The ones who can least afford to play are those who are drawn to it like a fly to the honey strip.

It's a regressive tax on us "wasteful, sinful spenders." ;-)

I've known good Mormon TBM couples who play the slots in Vegas and at casinos. I'm willing to bet there are as many who play the lottery where it's legal however discreetly. One minister who preached from the pulpit not to play lotto, his own wife won $5 million in an Illinois lottery. He didn't turn it down lol.

The LDS Church also opposed pari mutual betting for horse racing in the late 90's .Goodness forbid people would go to the track that was being proposed in the South Jordan area.Might take away time that could be spent in the never ending Mormon meeting schedule and double goodness forbid not raking in more tithing dollars.In Utah what the Mormon Church wants the Mormon Chuch gets . So go to Nevada, Wyoming or some other state for a day at the track ,a powerball ticket, booze that isn't heavily taxed but not here in Gods own little Utah. I very much enjoy my job here and need more years in the state retirement system but 3 seconds after I retire in about six years I am getting the hell out the Beehive State
