I stuck my shot in early in the comments department; I'm hopeful others who are more familiar with that era of Utah history than I am will chime in as well; I'm working on some DNA stuff, and experiencing a "senior moment" about the African-American woman who was sealed to Brigham Young--as a servant--with another woman who served as her "proxy" because she wasn't permitted to enter the Temple...

Jane Manning was sealed to Joseph.

From "On This Day in Mormon History:"

May 18, 1894 - In Salt Lake Temple, "Jane Elizabeth Manning (a
Negro woman) is sealed as a servitor for eternity to the Prophet
Joseph Smith." Joseph F. Smith acts as proxy. Aug 22, 1895 -
First Presidency and apostles decide to deny temple endowments to
"Black Jane" Manning (James) because of her "negro blood.

Bathsheba W. Smith stood as proxy for Jane Manning who was not
allowed to enter the temple.
