Lost gold

Learned something new, thought I had heard most stuff, Brigham thought the U.S. Was going to steal church assets so he liquidated church assets to gold, sent secret wagon train 20 something wagons to hide in the mountains, ran out of water, ambushed by Indians, killed everyone and Indians took off with all the gold never to be seen again, today's estimate at least 30 million. I must have been living under a rock. Google lost Mormon gold. Seems now would be a good time to pull out the magic rock, after all is Joseph thought he could find treasure.

I can only find two web sites with that story.
One has no references of any kind.
The other has one reference, that leads to a no-longer-existing web page.

Got any actual references for this tall tale?

Or, if it really happened---Brigham hid the gold for himself and said the Indians attacked and took it. Doesn't that fit Brigham's M.O. a little better haha?

"The Indians took it" for Brigham was the equivalent of "the dog ate my homework?"
