Context: Reported that Utah porn rate is high(est?) in the U.S.

I maintain that Mormonism survives partially due to the culture being very superficial; this in turn is caused by the temporary nature of friendships/relationships... ward & stake boundaries are rather arbitrary & changed without prior notice or discussion, others. When your 'friends' are no longer in the same ward, your attention - time is directed away from them.

On a personal, individual basis, obedience & loyalty are directed towards the Church, not toward peers. When someone is perceived as a doubter, friends & family often bail.

So, I think a lack of INTIMACY gets partial credit for (male) Mormon porn usage.

I think there is a greater lack of personal intimacy (social & sexual) than a lack of sexual events.

Porn related to M? Of Course, that's a no-brainer!

One more possible: Men who don't Climb the LDS Ladder are second-class people, 'members', & spouses: Gals want 'a winner'.

Sidecar: Are 'swingers' actually more in search of intimacy -or- just sexual experiences?

your feedback / thoughts-ideas?

Many illicit drugs are manufactured to cause a biological response, such as a feeling of euphoria or being in love, multiplied 100x. If you remove most of these drugs from a society with a specific demographic such as Mormonism, they will still try to use whatever vice that they have in-hand to get a similar feeling. Pun intended.

I think the only explanation necessary is the severe sexual repression in the church. They use guilt and shame to control their members on a deep, personal level, warping totally normal and natural urges and behaviors into "sins" so that people will keep filling those pews and emptying their wallets in an effort to "repent" and "be saved."

Religion has created a malady and sells people the cure. It's the oldest trick in the book; I'm just shocked that so many people are gullible enough to buy into it.

The question remains. What is the source of this information?

Considering the source is the DN... is it at all possible they ran the story with an ulterior motive? Such as, stir the pot of paranoia amongst the women folk? Gee.... if UT is the #1 subscriber that means my DH must be a porn addict!! I had better get right on top of that (no pun intended)!!!

Well, the source *isn't* the DN.
The DN reported on a study by a non-mormon Harvard researcher.
That's the source.

Is it possible the DN jumped all over that research because it played into the church's anti-porn crusade?
Sure.

But that didn't have anything to do with the original study :)

You are correct. I meant to imply that DN picked up the story for the reasons I suggested. In the end though, how many UT TBM's would even know the difference, especially if they read the DN??

...online porn SUBSCRIPTIONS...

Meanwhile, people in other places know how to get porn free.

@Source,
This is old news and has been going on for a while. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

I believe so. I think there are people for whom sexual release is all they want but I think for the majority of people (especially older folk) wanting to involve others in their sexual activities, it is intimacy, touching, and pleasures derived from nudity, touching, and breaking down personal barriers.

Perhaps the lack of personal time has also something to do with it: every second of every day is supposed to be focussed on TSCC, even if you don't have an activity or calling, and if that focus "on the Restored Gospelâ„¢" really isn't as life-fulfilling as promised, and even your spouse seems superficial in their affection because the church is #1 in their life, you might just want some "alone time" for a bit of pure, genuine, Natural Man, pleasure.

Wow, that was one long sentence.

My explanation is mormon women wearing those hideous "garments" to bed.

Right.

Also, having kids early and often and leaving them in the care of stay at home moms who are exhausted by the time kids are in bed doesn't make for great or frequent real sex.

I think it has to do with accessibility. Mormons are just as horney and excitable as anyone else.

Pre-internet, you had to buy porn at a store, get it in a mail subscription, etc. Way to risky for mormons....someone could see you at the store buying Playboy, or a neighbor sees the brown wrapper magazine go into your mailbox, or the spouse gets the mail before you do, etc.

With the internet, porn can be accessed in private, in your own home, even when the spouse is in the next room watching General Conference. It can also be discarded without a trace....Close the window fast and have your browser history delete when you log off.

So I don't think it has to do with sexual repression, garments, etc. I think its because its now available in a way that they can access it with way less fear of being caught.

Yes, but that would only bring Utah use up to the national average. There is something else at work, something that puts Utah at the end of the spectrum.

Mormonism basically outlaws sex, except to pop out a dozen kids. Many times it's been mentioned that when an organization owns your gonads, they own you.

Also mentioned many times is how screwed up you can get in the head when an organization makes sex dirty and forbidden while at the same time making it "sacred".

So, we now have 3 plausible explanations, no way to measure between them:

Represion
Ease of access
Lack of intimacy.

thanks for your comments!

Repression - this is what Mormonism does - implicitly.
Ease of access - shows how firm their foundations are.
Lack of intimacy - Mormonism promotes sex through multiplying and replenish the earth - not the replenishers. It is given that to meet the requirements The Lord has set, one only need to breed.

My first wife was very TBM and she soon learned how to manipulate me into doing things for her before we could have sex. I don't know if this is a mormon cultural trait or is it something that my ex-wife did. The mormon marriage dynamic seemed to create this unequal relationship where the men all want sex and the women dole it out when they want to get projects completed. Looking around at the other couples I felt like this was not just a thing limited to my TBM wife and I.

No wonder that mormon men turn to porn because they can have semi-guilt-free-sex and not be beholden to their wives.

Sexual manipulation is not unique to Mormonism.

Control of sex for whatever purpose, has always been the greatest power women have, and is why they pretty much control the world, though we don't hear about it, because it isn't politically correct.

Guys will put their life on the line regularly to get some sex.

I hear the same problem from non-mo guys at work about having to jump through endless hoops for sex.

And studies show that sexual manipulation is common. "control over sexual or reproductive health"

http://www.saveservices.org/2012/02/cdc-study-more-men-than-women-victims-of-partner-abuse/

SUMMARY: According to a 2010 national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Justice, in the last 12 months more men than women were victims of intimate partner physical violence and over 40% of severe physical violence was directed at men. Men were also more often the victim of psychological aggression and control over sexual or reproductive health. Despite this, few services are available to male victims of intimate partner violence.

In the morg culture where women are powerless, using sex as a pressure-point for control does seem like a way for women to strike back.

Obviously this problem is not unique to mormons. Still I do believe that mormonism sets up unhealthy behaviors in couples that lead to problems like this.

If sex with your wife/husband/partner is unsatisfactory or insufficient, it is a lot safer to masturbate to porn than have an affair or visit a "professional".

I think you are right on the money with all of that and i have nothing else to add really. Lack of intimacy, made to feel like one of the reject males in the group being on the low side of the pyramid. Mormonism and porn go hand in hand in my opinion. Porn is seen differently when you are out of the religion without a doubt.
