I bet a good argument could be made that when all you could own was what you could carry, equality was likely the norm...fill in your own reasons why.
But once you set up shop in one place, accumulation of possessions began and he/she with more possessions could come to assign to themselves 'stature', and the more possessions, the more 'stature'. Theft then became profitable, since what you stole could be stored, something the hunter/gatherers couldn't do!
So the answer is for all of us to live in our cars!
