Did Nelson, Hinckley, Hunter, McKay Smith, Young...

Any prophet EVER say that with regard to their sayings or "Revelations"

FYI, that qualifier is in "Profiles of A Prophet" by Hugh Brown, which has been re-published since he died...

Only when he had his fingers crossed behind his back.

I'm fairly sure Smith & possibly Young did. The D&C comes through Smith and the endowment text (much of it) from Young.

I believe “Thus saith the Lord” was quietly uttered after “Let’s go shopping!” at the Lord’sMall ribbon cutting ceremony.

When Hinckley died, I do believe Monson said "I now replaceth the Gord".

Saying this phrase is what got everybody in trouble in the first 50 years of the church's existence. Those sayings are what repel and frustrate people now. I don't think it's been said by a living president or apostle for more than 100 years.

According to E.T. Benson, that's not necessary...

"The prophet does not have to say “Thus saith the Lord” to give us scripture.

Sometimes there are those who argue about words. They might say the prophet gave us counsel but that we are not obliged to follow it unless he says it is a commandment. But the Lord says of the Prophet, “Thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you.” (D&C 21:4.)

And speaking of taking counsel from the prophet, in D&C 108:1, the Lord states:

“Verily thus saith the Lord unto you, my servant Lyman: Your sins are forgiven you, because you have obeyed my voice in coming up hither this morning to receive counsel of him whom I have appointed.”

Said Brigham Young, “I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call scripture.” (Journal of Discourses, 13:95.)"

But then, of course, they don't consider things "prophets" said to be scripture -- including this thing that E.T. Benson said.

Oops.

My point was that Hugh Brown said the Saying ... word for word... Of that phrase was a Signal, a departure from 'speaking as a man', which is a fall-back for untold % of TBS.

Gordon BS HinckLIEy did NOT really believe in MORmONISM as a religion. SO, Gordon BS HinckLIEy was fond of disavowing MORmON doctUrine much more than reiterating and confirming it. HinckLIEy's new MORmON doctUrine was based on dismantling old MORmON doctUrine.

Gordon BS HinckLIEy believed in MORmONISM as a business, and through the course of his foul rancid life the business of MORmONISM paid Gordon very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDhAIjF0wQI

Funny how the burden of heavy lifting is always left for the regular members -providing funds for THE (MORmON) church to operate, -personally doing without so often to generate those funds -having to determine If the prophet is speaking as a prophet or NOT so he is just speaking as a man, NOT a prophet.

I mean, ever since Jesus pulled the ultimate impossible trick of resurrecting himself from the dead, after that, then Jesus and His prophet leaders are off the hook for a lot of stuff, like always "standing for something" clear and definitive as declarations are made that may or may NOT be doctUrinal.

.......that is the thing about Lower Head Lord MORmON Jesus -He wants His existence to be attested to, but only to a certain limited extent. NOT so powerfully and definitively -like if HE was actually visibly present for everyone to see, so people have to rely on faith instead of knowledge so their faith an also be tested. I mean, Jesus can be let off the Hook ever since conquering death, but that does not mean that His followers are going to have things any better or any easier !!!!

Brigham Young called upon his prophetic mantle in declaring that
African blacks were descendants of Cain--Something that the
Church has publicly, and officially disavowed today.

Brigham Young referred to the Adam-God doctrine as something that
"God revealed to me." It was even made part of the Endowment
ceremony. Openly holding that Young's Adam-God doctrine is true
gets you excommunicated these days.

The Brethren have constantly claimed that their word must be
treated as the very word of God. However treating it this way
has lead to major problems (see BY's stuff above). So they have
learned, through hard experience, not to say things like "thus
saith the Lord." Or "God revealed to me . . . " because it
might come back later to bite them in the butt.

So when is the last time a president of the Church ("the
prophet") has unequivocally stated that something he's giving to
the Church came from God. When has the president made a
prophetic statement that can't later be dismissed as "oh he was
just speaking as a man"?

The most recent thing I can find is a statement by Ezra Taft
Benson that the Lord told him to tell the membership to read the
Book of Mormon. So as far as I can see there's been no
unequivocal claim of divine revelation from the brethren for
around 30 years.

So much for "living prophets."

Which reminds me--when's the last time anyone at the top
mentioned the number of earrings one should wear? Did that bit
of prophetic counsel die with Hinckley?

And what about the First Presidency's declaration that oral sex
between husband and wife disqualifies them for a TR? That was
way back in 1982. Since then, surveys of sexual behavior have
shown that oral sex has become MUCH more prevalent in society.
But the current generation of Mormons aren't being told about
its unholy, sinful nature. Does that mean that the First
Presidency letter from January of 1982 was just some old men's
opinions, and not really God's message for his children?

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mormon-leader-says-policy-against-gay-marriage-was-word-from-god/

"Apostle Russell M. Nelson, head of the religion's governing body and next in line for the Mormon presidency, said in a worldwide speech Sunday that Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints President Thomas S. Monson received instructions regarding same-sex couples directly from God."
